Seven Takeaways From the Consumer Analysts Group of New York Conference

What’s top of mind for marketers and investors right now? Judging by last week’s Consumer Analysts Group of New York meeting last week in Boca Raton, Fla., it’s the specter of acquisition, the need for cost cutting — oh, and Satanism and a glue shortage. Here we present seven takeaways from the conference, in which 28 consumer packaged-goods companies laid out a road map for the year ahead to analysts.

Price cuts ahead

For those who are into signs, Edgewell Personal Care, maker of Schick and private-label blades for such retailers such as Walmart, saw its stock plunge exactly 6.66% –the supposed mark of the devil — on Feb. 23 after P&G Chief Financial Officer Jon Moeller announced at the conference that Gillette will cut razor blade prices a whopping 12% on average starting March 30. The devil is in the details, of course, and P&G provided few. A spokesman said all Gillette blades, even high-end Fusion ProShield, could see some reduction. Mr. Moeller said prices on some blades could fall as much as 20%. An Edgewell spokesman noted that P&G already had been cutting blade prices, though Nielsen data from Deutsche Bank show only by 1% for the 12 weeks ended Jan. 28. The move aims to reverse share gains by cheaper blades that include Edgewell’s private labels, Harry’s (which moved into Target last year) and Unilever’s Dollar Shave Club.

'The Truth Is Hard,' Says The New York Times' First-Ever Oscars Ad

This Sunday, The New York Times will debut its first-ever ad to run on the Academy Awards. The simple, black-and-white typographic spot lays out, line by line, a litany of conflicting statements, anchored by the three words, “the truth is” — “The truth is alternative facts are lies. The truth is the media is dishonest. …The truth is a woman should dress like a woman. The truth is women’s rights are human rights” and so on.

The non-Oscars version of the spot will continue to run nationally on broadcast for a week after the awards, with digital ad buy continuing for a month. Other assets will include digital and social ads, print ads running in the Times from Friday through Monday, as well as out of home in New York, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C. and San Francisco.

Mr. Rubin did not disclose how much of the Times’ marketing budget for the Oscars ad entails. While the Times is “an efficient advertiser,” the ad does represent a “huge investment,” he said. As reported in Ad Age, 30-second ad slots during ABC’s broadcast cost anywhere between $2 to $2.5 million.

GSD&M, Richard Linklater Ask Viewers to ‘Pee with LGBT’

Austin agency GSD&M teamed up with director Richard Linklater to tackle Texas’ proposed Senate Bill 6 (SB6) for the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas and Legacy Community Health. SB6 would force transgender people to use the bathroom of their birth sex, rather than the gender they identify with.

This week, the Donald Trump issued an executive order reversing Obama-enacted protections for transgender students, claiming such responsibilities should be left up to state and local governments. While the ad was created before the Trump administration’s decision, it certainly gives it added weight at a time when the issue of transgender rights is in the spotlight.

“Taking a Seat, Making a Stand” calls on viewers to demonstrate their opposition to Texas’ proposed law as the issue is presently in the nation’s spotlight. Adweek reports that Linklater shot the ad in GSD&M’s Austin office, including its bathrooms, of course. “Now we can stop the bill, but there’s only one way,” says one contributor near the beginning of the ad. “You’ve gotta roll up your sleeves, pull down your pants, and pee with LGBT,” adds another.

The spot continues with a mix of playful slogans, such as “spray it to say it,” and reasons to oppose the bill, such as the argument that “money should be spent keeping kids in school, not out of bathrooms,” and that SB6 is bad for businesses. It concludes with the message, “This isn’t a privacy issue. This is a discrimination issue” before prompting viewers to take action by contacting Texas lawmakers.

Adweek points out that GD&M’s ad skips over some of the nuances of the bill, which actually addresses changing facilities as well, in its desire to communicate a simple message. It’s a perhaps understandable move, though, as it would be hard to squeeze the intricacies of the proposed bill into a 60-second spot that people will actually watch and share, and the message that “”This isn’t a privacy issue. This is a discrimination issue” remains the same.

Post Zubi Advertising, Joe Zubi Seeks His Next Job

For the first time since Tere Zubizarreta opened U.S. Hispanic shop Zubi Advertising Services more than 40 years ago, there won’t be a Zubizarreta at Zubi.

Joe Zubi and Michelle Zubizarreta are planning their next acts after earlier this month selling the family-owned agency started by their mother to WPP’s GTB agency network in a deal that brought one of the last remaining significant pieces of Ford Motor Co. business into the holding company.

Rather than an earnout agreement that would keep them at the agency, the two siblings have a brief two-month consulting agreement through next month.
