Geneva SPCA Animal Rights Adoption: Rupture

Outdoor, Print
Geneva SPCA

Three subjects show moments of everyday life during which animals are too often forgotten and set aside. The campaign shows a new way of approaching abandonment. When the family grows, during a move or when a death occurs, abandonment is not always deliberate. Thus animals are not always part of the projects. Fortunately, the Geneva SPCA welcome them and give them another chance.

Notebook: Does the Disappearance of Sea Ice Matter?

The melting away of Arctic ice because of climate change won’t raise sea levels, but what it means for the world is one of the big, complicated questions in science right now.

China's State-Owned Automakers May Be Too Weak to Compete

Every year, China’s big state-owned automakers celebrate their inclusion on the list of Fortune 500 companies — the ultimate status symbol for up-and-coming companies.

So the last thing these automakers want you to know is how very weak they really are. But that’s changing. Last week, some of the companies finally admitted that they can’t survive without the partnerships they’ve formed with foreign automakers. And they did so by warning Beijing not to allow foreign automakers to gain majority shares of their Chinese joint ventures.

Under current policy, foreign automakers that want to produce vehicles in China must form joint ventures with Chinese companies. The rules also limit foreign ownership in these partnerships to 50 %. China enacted the policy in the 1980s when it opened its auto industry to the outside world.

Ralph Lauren Comes Back to TV With Olympic Spot

Since 2008, clothing retailer Ralph Lauren has been an Olympics sponsor and is the official outfitter of Team USA for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympics and Paralympics. But it’s never run a TV spot on the Olympics — until now.

In fact, the commercial is the first TV ad for Ralph Lauren’s apparel business in at least eight years, according to David Lauren exec VP-advertising, marketing and communications for the $4.7 billion retailer (the brand has advertised its fragrance business on TV before.) The 30-second anthem spot touts patriotism and features six athletes, including swimmer Ryan Lochte, beach volleyball player April Ross and freestyle wrestler Jordan Burroughs, as they push themselves to prepare for the competition.

“Year after year, we always walk away feeling this incredible response from the gameswhether it’s customers shopping products or talking about our brands,” said Mr. Lauren. “It’s an invaluable partnership.” He noted the company typically sees a big sales boost during the competition. The brand currently offers a customization program where shoppers can put their own names on the back of shirts.

Jgermeister Taps Opperman Weiss for Global Creative Ahead of Brand Refresh

Jgermeister has hired Opperman Weiss as lead global creative agency as the brand embarks on a new heritage campaign for next year.

Opperman Weiss was selected based on prior relationships it had with the spirits brand, said Jeff Weiss, co-founder of the shop. There was no formal review, and Jgermeister did not previously have an agency leading creative on a global basis.

In 2014, Jgermeister hired Deutsch New York for creative in the U.S., following an internally managed review. “We wish them every success as they continue defining the brand,” said a Deutsch spokesperson.

Canary, Mouse, or Just Bull? Talk of 'Restaurant Recession' Meets Doubts

One analyst last week proclaimed the start of a “restaurant recession” amid weaker same-store sales growth for McDonald’s as he downgraded 11 big chains. Talk of a “maturing economic cycle” also came from Ford as it announced disappointing profits and lower sales forecasts.

But many aren’t buying the recession talk, notably the Federal Reserve and the retail industry. “Near-term risks to the economic outlook have diminished,” the Fed said in a statement July 27. Though the Fed remains wary of low inflation and the global economic outlook, stocks have rebounded since the U.K.’s vote to leave the European Union last month. Odds now look higher the Fed will actually raise interest rates to restrain the economy as soon as September.

The National Retail Federation last week actually increased its forecast for 2016 sales growth to 3.4% from 3.1%, based on improving economic indicators. Rather than a canary in the coal mine, McDonald’s and other restaurant chains may be confronting a different animal, what Dave Schick, retail analyst and research director for Consumer Edge Research, calls “the mouse that roared.”
