Ogilvy Inherits the Motorola Business from Droga5

Yesterday we posted on Droga5 resigning the Motorola account after 4 years, and today the client has confirmed that Ogilvy will now have the portion of the business previously handled by that agency.

From a Lenovo/Motorola spokesperson: “Lenovo works with a roster of agencies and does not declare an agency of record for various aspects of the business. We can confirm that Ogilvy is currently working on Motorola.”

As per our headline, Ogilvy has effectively inherited the phone portion of parent company Lenovo’s business from Droga5.

This is not particularly surprising given that Lenovo picked Ogilvy and its sister agencies (including OgilvyOne, OgilvyInteractive, Mindshare and Ogilvy PR) in a 2005 review to work on its “Think” line of products. The only major change in that relationship was a 2013 review which sent the North American media portion of the business to Digitas (it had been with Neo@Ogilvy).

Ogilvy has also worked on Motorola in the past, winning a 2000 global review that served as a consolidation of the company’s various business units. At the time, the deal was worth $175 million. (The digital portion of the account later went to FCBi in 2005.)

There would appear to be no such consolidation this time as the client tells us that “The Motorola work is being handled through our existing roster of agencies and there will be no review.”

Those agencies currently include DigitasLBi and VML in addition to Ogilvy.

We Hear: Owner, Chief Creative Officer Among Those Leaving The Barbarian Group

Earlier this week we posted on an ongoing wave of executive departures at Cheil Worldwide’s The Barbarian Group in New York.

Today, as promised, we have more information on that development. The agency’s current CEO Peter Kim confirmed in an official statement that a restructuring has occurred.

“The evolution of the tech industry and its impact on consumer communications has transformed the agency landscape. In response, The Barbarian Group reorganized and refined its focus this week in support of client needs. We are confident that this strategic shift in business direction will make us a stronger company in the long run.”

Throughout the week, our sources gave us a bit more detail on this strategic shift. Many of Barbarian’s top executives and department leaders have left or will be leaving after they finish negotiating the details of their departures.

According to tipsters, these names include:

  • Owner/CXO Keith Butters
  • Chief creative officer Edu Pou
  • Head of talent/HR Michelle Prota
  • Head of account management Sherri Chambers

We also hear–again from multiple sources–that the restructuring included at least one round of layoffs beyond the names mentioned above, all of whom will officially be resigning from their positions.

Kim declined to elaborate on the scale of the layoffs or Cheil’s plans to remake the agency. But we do hear that the total number dismissed beyond the department leaders is in the double digits.

An inside source also tells us that our assumptions regarding an all-but-unrecognizable Barbarian Group that will emerge from this shift are accurate.

JWT Will Move Beyond the Gustavo Martinez Scandal With a ‘Diversity and Inclusion Council’

As soon as Tamara Ingram became JWT’s new global chairman/CEO following the March resignation of Gustavo Martinez, she let the world know that “diversity and inclusion will be at the top of my agenda … [because] companies don’t value women enough.”

According to AdAge’s sources, she already made good on that promise by planning a Diversity and Inclusion Council.

AdAge’s report includes several interesting details:

  • Ingram announced the Council in an internal video
  • The agency has partnered with consulting firm inQUEST to act as an objective third party reviewing its efforts on this front
  • Ingram will also launch a “talk to me” hotline for employees who feel threatened or uncomfortable about “certain issues”

Perhaps most surprisingly, JWT chief talent officer Laura Agostini–who played a central role in the Erin Johnson lawsuit and allegedly declined to act on Johnson’s repeated complaints about Martinez’s behavior–will retain her position.

JWT also hired former Y&R chief talent officer Celia Berk to fill the newly-created role of chief employee engagement officer while simultaneously acting as group talent partner within the larger WPP organization. Her LinkedIn profile describes the new gigs as such:

As Chief Employee Experience Officer, reports to the CEO and focuses on ensuring the work lives of JWT employees are as rewarding as possible.

As Group Talent Partner, reports to WPP’s Chief Client Team Officer and works with the company’s 45 global account teams to advance WPP’s strategic focus on “horizontality.”

According to the AdAge story (and yes, they definitely scooped us on this), Ingram released an internal video in which she essentially repeated the same points in the U.K. appearance linked atop this post regarding the importance of “represent[ing] all people,” including every member of JWT’s own staff.

An agency spokesperson referred us to WPP’s PR firm Finsbury, which has not provided any comment at the time of this post. It would certainly seem like someone within the agency spoke to AdAge, but there’s no official statement or rollout yet.

Expect to hear more next week.

Motorola: Don't Txt Signs

Media, Promo, Direct Marketing
Motorola

In Brazil, the “No Parking” sign is a common symbol. In it, we see the letter E (“estacionar” = park), crossed by a red line inside a red circle. For our consciousness campaign, we made identical signs, but using all of the other letters and we put them in the same places that No Parking signs are found. These unusual signs attracted the immediate attention of motorists and pedestrians alike, getting them to stop and read our message: while driving, every letter is prohibited.

Wyclef, FCB and Some Old Horndog Return to Hype the FIAT 124 Spider

We know Lauryn Hill has been busy pissing off her fans by showing up late to concerts or cancelling them altogether. But what about her fellow Fugee and former candidate for president of Haiti Wyclef Jean??

Turns out the man who said he was going to be gone ’til November is already back to promote the FIAT 124 Spider, a sports car so sexy that the company gave one to 2016’s Playmate of the Year. (They still have those??)

Wyclef has some help in this case from a real eagle enhanced with some CGI help.

So it turns out that sometimes the great birds are jealous of us.

The behind the scenes short is kind of cool in tracing the falconer’s work in getting the birds to do “exactly what we want.” We would argue that they did a better job of acting than the extras.

The campaign also includes “No Blue Pill Needed,” which is the sequel to the original “Blue Pill.”

Did you get that one, or was it too subtle for you?

Here’s what the client’s CMO Olivier Francois had to say about the work:

“Our creative mindset is to always innovate. ‘Free Like a Bird’ is the first commercial ever filmed by an eagle and this distinctive approach demanded music that was equally compelling to serve as the backdrop for the image, and Wyclef Jean enthusiastically jumped at the opportunity, creating a track that is likely to be another chart topper.

‘No Blue Pill Needed’ leverages the strength of the original award-wining ‘Blue Pill,’ which has over 30 million views on YouTube. Allowing our followers to act as a sound board for our campaigns has proven successful for the brand in the past. Posting longer-form versions of both videos – which first appeared during the reveal of the Fiat 124 Spider at the Geneva auto show and L.A. auto show, respectively – across the FIAT brand’s digital and social channels gives us the opportunity to see the fans’ reactions to both and inspire our decision when it comes time to select the official television campaign.”

He did not, however, elaborate on the nature of the relationship between his company and FCB Chicago.

We are also quite curious as to how much this car will cost and what sort of consumers might be legitimately interested in buying it. But in order to find out one has to…you guessed it…sign up for email updates from FIAT Chrysler.

Who are we kidding. We’ve never owned a car.
