Not Just Millennials: Consumers Want Experiences, Not Things

In their endless quest to decode millennial behavior, marketers have placed a microscope on millennials’ spending habits, hoping to glean patterns for how their behavior differs from previous generations. Good luck cracking that one.

We’re a long way from anyone being able to proclaim that they’ve “figured out the millennial consumer,” but we have gathered some valuable research. For example, millennials eschew luxury goods for sustainable ones; prefer buying organic and fair trade; and they’re a lot more willing to shell out money on experiences that enhance their lives (and their Instagram and Snapchat feeds) rather than on material things.

The thing is, it isn’t just millennials. The interesting trend I’m seeing is that these traits are bleeding beyond this demographic. Millennials are proving to be cultural trailblazers for older and newer generations. Consumers today are broadly catching on to the notion that experiences make you happier and are as valuable or more than buying fancy things.

Bringing the Internet of Things to Buses in Beijing

In public transport, you often see commuters hanging from the straps with one hand and checking smartphones with the other. There’s clearly opportunity in that moment for marketers, especially in Asia, with its reliance on both subways and smartphones. But what exactly?

In China, the Cheil PengTai digital agency sensed an opening for local dairy giant Yili, whose Meiyitian yogurt drink brand was seeking to promote healthier lifestyles.

In Beijing buses, the straps became health monitoring systems for people to grip, measuring their heart rate, body mass index and balance during their daily commute. The gadgets instantly linked up to their smartphones through NFC interaction.

2016 Election Digital Ad Spending Will Break $1 Billion

A report from Borrell Associates shows digital is gaining importance in politics, breaking $1 billion or 9.5% of total political ad spending in the 2016 election season. But broadcast TV spending will still take the lion’s share at $5.8 billion or 51% of the total.

If you’re worried you’ll see less red, white and blue ads with patriotic symbolism, don’t be; the report, “20152016 Political Advertising Outlook,” said political advertising spending will hit $11.4 billion in 2016, a 20% increase from 2014. Combined spending for this year and next year will reach a staggering $16.5 billion.

After broadcast TV comes cable spending, with $1.1 billion or 10% of the total 2016 political ad spend. Digital closely follows, then newspapers with $848 million (7.4% )and radio with $827 (7.3%) of total spending.

Chase and McGarryBowen Part Ways

McGarryBowen and JPMorgan Chase have parted ways.

Though the agency had worked on a number of pieces of the business for JPMorgan Chase and its subsidiaries Chase and JPMorgan, those assignments gradually went to other agencies or in-house, leaving the shop with corporate work, including the “Master” anthem spot above. McGarryBowen is now saying goodbye to that final piece of work after it finishes up an assignment, according to people familiar with the matter.
