Target Captures Star Wars Fan Memories From 1977 to Today


Target is using the Force to connect with consumers this fall.

The Minneapolis-based retailer is unveiling a tribute to Star Wars fandom that features an interactive website offering users a spot in the galaxy as well as an in-store shop with exclusive merchandise.

As part of a partnership with Lucasfilm, Target will collect Star Wars memories, like lightsaber battles and Chewbacca impersonations, through a microsite called SharetheForce.Target.com. Users can submit photos and videos to the site from Facebook and Instagram in exchange for a unique set of galactic coordinates indicating where their memories will be housed.

When KFC plucked Darrell Hammond from the role of Colonel Sanders, passing the closet of white suits to Norm Macdonald, many wondered whether the chicken chain was disappointed with its spring campaign.

But KFC U.S. Chief Marketing Officer Kevin Hochman called the Hammond-led effort “phenomenally successful.”

“We had tremendous buzz and our sales were better than what we had expected,” said Mr. Hochman, who joined Yum-owned KFC in 2014 after nearly two decades at Procter & Gamble.

Outside China’s most developed cities, where foreign makeup brands can be hard to find in shops, the app also offers a chance to experience the brand and buy online, Ms. Dubey said. Shoppers can share the looks on their social media through all-purpose app WeChat or use their smartphone to purchase any of the products on Alibaba’s e-commerce platform, Tmall.

Ms. Dubey previously led the L’Oral team at Mindshare Shanghai, where she was managing director of Team L’Oral. She was hired by the client two years ago to head L’Oral’s marketing efforts in China. Before that, she had worked at agencies in India and China for 16 years.

As China’s leading skin care marketer, L’Oral had a 12% value share in a fragmented category last year and was also the top cosmetics company, with a 32% share, according to Euromonitor International. In competitive categories, where local and Korean brands are getting stronger, L’Oral is successfully tapping into China’s e-commerce boom.
