Yelp: Display Advertising Will Be 'Discontinued' by End of Year

Online review site Yelp will phase out display advertising by the end of the year, the San-Francisco based company said during its second-quarter earnings call Tuesday. Yelp will instead increase its efforts toward selling native and local advertising products. At the same time it’s investing in its own marketing efforts.

“We believe that eliminating brand advertising, which we also refer to as our display advertising product, will benefit the company over the long term,” said Yelp founder and CEO Jeremy Stoppelman. “The industry trend toward increasingly disruptive display advertising is at odds with our focus on the consumer experience, particularly within [our mobile] app.”

Revenue from brand advertising totaled $8.3 million, down 8% when compared to the second quarter of 2014. “While we recognize there’s a near-term impact on revenue, we believe this is the right decision for the long-term success of the company,” Mr. Stoppelman added.

What You Should Know About P&G's Next CEO, David Taylor

David Taylor will take the helm as CEO of the world’s biggest advertising spender, Procter & Gamble Co., as of Nov. 1, the company announced today, a move widely anticipated since global beauty duties were added to his role as group president-global health and grooming earlier this year.

Mr. Taylor, 56, has been at P&G since 1980, and group president one level from CEO since 2013. But he’s made relatively few public appearances with investors compared to other contenders for the top job over the years and was until recently a relative dark horse, despite leading some of P&G’s more successful if less glamorous brands. Here are some things you probably didn’t know about P&G’s putative next CEO.

Twitter to Hire CMO, Debut Integrated Campaign to Kickstart User Growth

Twitter has been able to grow its ad revenue despite its struggles to grow its user base — at least for now. To make sure its decelerating user growth doesn’t deflate its ad-revenue growth, the company is planning a big marketing push later this year.

Twitter plans to roll out its first integrated marketing campaign by the end of 2015 and is in the process of hiring a CMO, the company’s CFO and de facto marketing head Anthony Noto said during the company’s earnings call on Tuesday. Mr. Noto said the campaign will promote Twitter’s upcoming Project Lightning, a new feature designed to curate tweets around live events that’s scheduled to debut in the fall.

The emphasis on marketing underscores one of the bigger issues facing Twitter’s business: It’s not attracting many new people to sign up for the social network. In the second quarter, Twitter only grew its number of monthly active users by 12% year-over-year to 302 million people. That figure doesn’t include the 12 million people in a given month who use Twitter via text messaging to follow specific Twitter users without registering their own Twitter accounts, which limits Twitter’s ability to target ads to that audience segment.

Goodby, Silverstein & Partners Shutters Its New York Office

About two and a half years after opening its doors in New York City, Goodby, Silverstein & Partners has closed its East Coast office.

The NY hub had suffered after the failed merger between its client Comcast and Time Warner Cable in April. According to founder Jeff Goodby, that led to staff cuts across the board, including at least half of its team in New York, which had numbered at around 20 at the time.

“The loss of Time Warner created a huge revenue gap that we weren’t able to surmount,” said Paul Caiozzo, who’d been executive creative director of the New York office.

Super Bowl Live Stream Will Show the Same Commercials as TV for the First Time

All the same Super Bowl commercials you see on TV will run during the game’s live stream too for the first time next year.

CBS, which will air Super Bowl 50 on Feb. 7, will be the first network to match the game’s online ad load to its highly-anticipated extravaganza of TV commercials, the network said, confirming news that was first reported by Variety.

In previous years, commercials that appeared in the live stream were sold separately from on-air spots. While some of the same commercials appeared on both platforms, advertisers were never required to buy both. Some marketers, in fact, opted to just purchase the live stream if they couldn’t afford or weren’t willing to pay the hefty price tag tied to TV spots, while others skipped the digital offshoot and stuck with TV.

Anatomy of an Ad: MasterCard's Priceless Soccer Surprise

“If you ruin this for me, I’ll fucking kill you,” Olli Waldhauer, the co-director of MasterCard’s UEFA-themed Priceless Surprise warned as I climbed into the front seat of the van.

While trying to shoot the final scene of one of the most complex Priceless Surprises MasterCard had ever pulled off, the marketer, along with team members from McCann Bucharest and Octagon, had run into a potentially idea-killing roadblock.

There were only four hours until the Champion’s League Final was set to kick off and the police had reneged on their promise to grant them entrance into the grounds of Olympia Stadium.

Amazon Envisions Distinct Drone Zones for Future Delivery Fleet

The first wave of long-range commercial drones should be allowed to operate in a narrow, low-altitude band and must agree to be tracked, according to Amazon’s vision of the future.

While U.S. government regulations now just allow limited usage of unmanned flights, Amazon is creating a blueprint for an air-traffic system and the necessary technology is rapidly maturing, said Gur Kimchi, a VP who heads the company’s drone-delivery division.

“It’s completely doable,” Mr. Kimchi said, laying out for the first time how the company envisions an orderly system guiding small, unmanned delivery aircraft. He is unveiling the company’s view at a conference Tuesday sponsored by NASA at its Ames Research Center in Mountain View, Calif.
