Four Reasons Why Brands Should Unlike Facebook's Video Ads

About a year ago, most users began to see something new in their Facebook news feed. Sandwiched between birth announcements and attention-seeking status updates were video clips. A lot of video clips, in fact. By September 2014, after the “Ice Bucket Challenge,” Facebook was bragging that it served a billon views per day.

There’s a reason why Facebook’s videos took off: Unlike YouTube links, the vast majority of the videos were autoplay by default, of higher quality, and took up more space on the page. The advertising implications were obvious. Or were they?

Video ads deliver greater awareness and usually command higher CPMs than banners, which explains Facebook’s interest in them. For advertisers, though, the case is less compelling. Despite Facebook’s massive reach, if you’re looking for deeper awareness and engagement, your video ad will probably perform a lot better if presented outside of Facebook — particularly on contextually relevant sites — for the following reasons:

Creative Agency Makes the Shortlist in Coca-Cola's Media-Agency Review

Creative agencies don’t typically participate in big media agency reviews, but WPP’s Ogilvy &Mather is about to blow up that notion as it competes for a piece of Coca-Cola’s media buying and planning account.

“We are not only reviewing our agencies but also our agency model,” Ivan Pollard, senior-VP for connections, investments and assets at Coca-Cola North America, said in a statement to Ad Age. “We have invited Ogilvy instead of Carat to provide an alternative perspective on communications strategy.”

Ad Age reported on Monday that Carat was not proceeding with the review, one of more than a dozen major accounts in play at the same time.

Paralyzed Surfer Experiences Thrill of Riding Waves Thanks to Reef, McCann

Though his surfing career was cut short when he was 18 due to an accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down, Nicolas Gallegos got to escape the confines of his wheelchair and experience the feeling of being on a board once again thanks to Argentinean surfing champ, Martin Passeri.

In a new four-minute film from McCann Buenos Aires and surfing apparel brand Reef, Passeri essentially sacrifices his shot at a sixth Argentina National Surf title by letting his pal Gallegos ride shotgun in a sense and feel something he hasn’t felt in the 20 years since his accident. It’s a somewhat touching human interest story that should surely stoke surfing aficionados and novices alike. Regarding his noble, kindhearted move, Reef Pro Team star Passeri says, “Surfing is sharing the experience of something that has no explanation to it. When you share it, when you can really carry the other person, and see the same smile that you get when you slide over the wave, that’s a new wave. The euphoria we both felt on the board was awesome.” In turn, the pair’s adventure echoes the campaign’s simple sentiment: “Life’s short. Go surfing.”

W+K Portland Takes Yoplait Back to its (French) Roots

W+K Portland debuted its first work for Yoplait since being named lead agency for the brand in late March.

A new 30-second spot promote Yoplait Original as now having 25 percent less sugar while emphasizing the brand’s French roots — the company was formed when French dairy co-ops Yola and Coplait merged into a single company. A Yoplait spokesperson told Creativity this is the first time in over ten years that the brand has emphasized its cultural origins. The spot, directed by Annonymous Content’s Autumn De Wilde, pictures a woman with a French accent tasting Yoplait’s new sugar-reduced formula for snack time and congratulating the brand on their success. It’s a straightforward approach that is somewhat marred by including English subtitles when the woman speaks — a move that comes across as patronizing to both the actress and audiences. It’s unclear at this point if the spot is indicative of W+K’s overall approach for the brand or just a one-time effort to introduce the reduced sugar angle, but if they do continue in this vein, it would be wise to give everyone the benefit of the doubt and drop the subtitles.

Getting up to Speed on Programmatic Ad Skills

It’s a good time to be an online marketer. Fueled by programmatic, the ad tech industry will reach nearly $100 billion in revenue by 2020, compared to the projected $30 billion for this year. And it’s exciting to see that the industry has embraced programmatic principles and started to become very innovative in this space. It’s time to get into the programmatic game.

So how do you get up to speed when all you see are crazy alphabetic combinations of programmatic jargon everywhereacronyms such as DMPs, DSPs, CPMs, CPAs and VTs? The secret lies in the “textbook” Applied Programmatic Advertising Skills. Like the days of SAT testing, you will find power in this prep book when questions like these come up:

What exactly is programmatic?

A Neon Light Tribute to Bach
