Best Practices: Five Ways to Win with Data-Driven Marketing

Data-driven marketing has come to the forefront for companies that want to better engage their customers and prospects. With data-driven marketing, firms are able to gather, integrate, and assess data from a variety of internal and external sources to help enhance value.

In “The Value of Data: Consequences for Insight, Innovation, and Efficiency in the U.S. Economy,” the Direct Marketing Association’s Data-Driven Marketing Institute points out that the flow of data throughout the data-driven marketing economy is forcing traditional producer-centric firms to become increasingly customer-centric. In the old days, in the words of Henry Ford, “Customers could have any color car they wanted, so long as it was black.”

Here are five ways companies are using data-driven marketing to enhance customer value and gain better positioning within their respective industries:

Big Raccoon 3D Street Art

Google Says 46% of Web Video Ads Are Never Viewed

Digital was supposed to fix that old adage about an advertiser knowing that half of its ads are working but being unsure about which half. Instead advertisers are scratching their heads over whether half of their ads are even seen.

Typically the industry’s viewability discussion focuses on display ads. Static banners can be appended seemingly anywhere on a site, including tucked out of view in order to juice the number of ads on a page (and the money a publisher can make per pageview) without making the part of the page most visitors see look like Times Square. That practice is so pervasive that Google said last year that 56% of the display ads it served on its own and others’ sites never appeared in view on someone’s screen.

But it’s not only display ads. Video ads are often put on the viewability backburner because most video ads are thought to run inside a video player, usually before or during the video someone has chosen to watch.

Neon Light in Movies

10 Years Photographing Norvegian Single Alleway

Agencies Should Celebrate Small Businesses in a Big Way

Whether they’re agencies or the clients that they serve, nearly all businesses start small. Some remain comfortably so, while others set aggressive growth targets and seek to grow in synch with demand. Five employees become 50, then 500 if everything fits together and falls into place. A recognized brand is built. A vibe and culture is established. Momentum builds. There’s something special that happens when small businesses of all sorts launch, survive and begin to thrive. These early days are more defining than any other time in a business’s growth.

These are the days when energies find focus. When innovation and creativity are the end- or by-product of talent, resourcefulness and hard work. Days when teamwork and collaboration are not merely concepts, but readily seen on the faces of coworkers.

These are defining days when the “small” in small business implies the advantages of true personal service, customization, flexibility, commitment and trust. The days when everything is “live” and it either works or it doesn’t. You have to experience it to know how it feels. The good and the bad. The excitement and exhilaration that comes with a win. The agony that accompanies a loss. It’s business life on the edge, and every day is a challenge.

The Tough Reality Facing an Advertising Mother of the Year

Beep beepbeep

That’s the sound of the U-Haul backing up in my driveway with my Mother of the Year award. A running joke between my older sister and me when one of us has had a particularly bad mothering moment. All it takes is those three beeps to bring us comic relief and levity to the challenges, frustrations and guilt of being a working mom.

Advertising Women of New York (AWNY) and Working Mother Magazine (WMM) select 20 women/mothers working in advertising to honor every year. I was honored to be chosen along with 19 other kickass, hardworking women in advertising this year. Just the fact that I was nominated means my agency, DDB, believes in me and respects what it takes to be a mom in a creative leadership role. Long hours, weekends, extensive travel — and the fact that only 11% of creative directors are women. I was flattered and touched by the outpouring of congratulations, love and respect from colleagues past and present.

Wonder and Awe

Searching for something that makes us feel

by

From Adbusters #119: Manifesto For World Revolution Part 2

I was running this morning, a long run, a long time for thoughts to wander and stimulus to seep in. By a leafy path and a twisting stream, there was a kid, no more than 12 months old, in a pram, watching ducks, pointing, shrieking, excited, thrilled. A duck disappeared below the waterline and the kid screamed and cried.

I thought to myself as I ran further: I wonder if that kid even knew it was a duck? To him, what is a duck? It could be anything, a bounding dog scaring a child, exciting them to pant-wetting thrills. A koala sleeping, as innocuous as anything, curiously cuddly. A fish, under the water or on a pristine beach, perplexingly beautiful, colorful, enthralling.

All these things have the power to enthral or upset children, to fascinate deeply. But their wonder and power, their simplicity is lost on us adults — why?

We obsess over things to make us feel. We search constantly for “meaning,” something “real,” some inspiration. We trawl websites, magazines, “newsfeeds,” blogs and TV shows. We look to our peers, to “friends” online, to those we believe are “successful” or “high achievers.” Clicking, swiping, tapping, uploading, downloading, sharing, liking — it’s all 2D, synthetic, diluted, controlled, agenda-laden, artificial, synthetic , and it doesn’t seem to be working.

Why did we forget? How did we forget? The things that once made us feel the most, think the most, be the most — the things that filled us with the most wonder and awe and excitement and new emotion, unfelt and wild, were once those ducks on the stream?

Double Vision Surreal Portraits
