Viacom Optimizes TV Buys with Vantage Data Targeting

While early discussions in and around the pre-upfront silly season have been dominated by breathless encomiums to data and all its multivalent wonders, very few networks are prepared to start trading against their advanced metrics. The Viacom Media Networks group looks like one notable exception.

According to media buyers who have kicked the tires on Viacom’s suite of data-fueled advertising products, the MTV Networks brands were already among the most proactive in the TV space. They are now introducing Viacom Vantage, offering clients new levels of targeting and optimization.

Essentially, Vantage allows Viacom to identify the programming assets that are the most effective environments in which to reach a client’s self-defined consumer target. Or, to put it more plainly, Vantage is a bit of like a computer dating service. The client inputs the sort of traits it looks for in a customer, and Vantage’s proprietary algorithm spits out a list of shows where the two are most likely to intersect.

Senior CD Grant Smith Leaving BBDO for McCann

Both BBDO and McCann confirmed today that Grant Smith, EVP and senior creative director, will be leaving the former for the latter.

After writing copy for Cliff Freeman for several years, Smith joined BBDO in 2004 and worked on such accounts as Monster, FedEx, the BBC, and more before leaving in 2009 to start his own venture Handsome Advertising along with Art Director Rick Ardito.

Smith and Ardito the rejoined the agency in 2011 to lead creative on AT&T under then ECD/current CCO Greg Hahn; Smith’s name has since appeared among the credits on some of BBDO’s most memorable work.

While McCann did not provide details regarding Smith’s hire and told us that he will work across multiple accounts, a tipster claimed that he will lead the New York Lottery business, which went from DDB to the IPG agency last November.

A second source claims that he will work under Eric Silver of the now-defunct Silver+Partners, who became McCann’s North American CCO in February (the two have worked together in the past).

Expect an official announcement to come.

Warren Buffett Played a Classic Coke Jingle on the Ukelele for the Company's Annual Meeting

Warren Buffett is known for many things, but singing hasn’t been one of them—until now.

Buffett played “I’d Like to Buy the World a Coke” on a custom ukulele (presented to him recently by Wieden + Kennedy) in a video Wednesday that opened the company’s annual meeting as it celebrates its 100th birthday.

Odd? For sure. But certainly on brand. The billionaire investor and philanthropist does love Coke. Not only does he own $16 billion in Coca-Cola stock, but he told Fortune in February that he’s “a quarter Coca-Cola” and drinks five 12-ounce servings of the soda daily.

The custom ukulele, which has a sound hole in the shape of the classic Coke bottle, was made by Portland-based luthier Mark Roberts. Crafted in five weeks out of European Carpathian spruce from Romania, reclaimed Honduran mahogany and Malagasy ebony, the red ukulele was given to Buffett last month at his Berkshire Hathaway office in Omaha.

“He picked it up and practiced the song, changing the key a few times,” said Thomas Harvey, account director at W+K. “You can see him tuning up and singing at the start of the film. The whole process only took about 30 minutes.”
