These Photoshop Experts Are Good, but How Good Are They in Photoshop 1.0?

Today’s Photoshop sorcerers can do practically anything to an image, but do their powers extend all the way back to the software’s original release?

Clearly not, as you can see in the video below. E-learning site CreativeLive asked several expert editors to try their hand at 1990’s Adobe Photoshop 1.0, which lacked a vast majority of the features designers and photographers rely on today.

The clip is meant to celebrate Photoshop’s 25-year evolution, which is displayed quite clearly through the users’ many failed attempts to find their favorite shortcuts and tools. It also highlights how user experience and convenience have shaped Adobe’s approach to new features. (The ability to undo more than once is clearly appreciated by all.)

How to Make a Great Radio Ad, Now That You Know How to Make a Terrible One

The Radio Mercury Awards recently made a two-part video about “Things We Don’t Want to Hear in a Radio Ad.” In my writeup, I wanted to know what they do want to hear in radio ad. And dear God, they actually listened to me. (This may be the most influence I’ve ever had over anything. I am hyperventilating and should probably lie down.)

While I go mad with power, you should watch unshaven Mercury chief judge Jim Elliott explain what makes a good radio ad. His answer? “Undeniable human truth.” Kind of a tall order, but that just means good writing and sharp ideas that take advantage of the medium.

Thanks for the clarification, Jim! (That wasn’t sarcastic, I really do appreciate it.) The video also lists the reasons people should try for an award this year. “Skrilla” and “hooch,” presumably free, are among them.

And if you missed the “Things We Don’t Want to Hear in a Radio Ad” videos, check them out below.

Grey NY Pairs Egg Board with Kevin Bacon

Grey New York launched a new campaign for the American Egg Board with the spot “Side of Kevin,” starring Kevin Bacon. (His appearance follows brother Michael Bacon‘s appearance last year in 360i’s “Unsung Bacon” campaign for Oscar Mayer.)

The online ad, entitled “Side of Kevin,” opens with a woman making eggs for breakfast. “There is no better start to the day than eggs for breakfast,” she says to herself, “except maybe eggs with a side of…” and then Kevin Bacon adds “bacon” while laying on her kitchen counter, predictably scaring the crap out of the woman. From here, the spot trades in puns (although Bacon himself is not a fan), awkwardness and innuendo. Although she’s initially startled to find Kevin Bacon laying on her kitchen counter, she’s soon more than a little flirtatious. With the nearly guaranteed viral formula of celebrity awkwardness, it would be a surprise if this one doesn’t take off. Grey New York manages to work in a little self-awareness as well: when the woman tells Bacon he sounds like a commercial, he says, “Actually, it’s a web film.”

“With a last name like Bacon, I’m the obvious choice, and I’m excited to be a part of the new Incredible Edible Egg campaign,” the actor said in a statement. “I like the creativity behind the idea, and I’ve always been a big fan of eggs. They’re a nutritional powerhouse and I never get tired of them because there are so many ways you can eat them.”

Droga5 Loses AOR Status for Chobani

chobani

Last week we got a tip indicating that Chobani might soon be in the market for a new creative AOR, and company representatives quickly told us that wasn’t the case.

It was the wrong question to ask: AdAge just broke the news that the company will abandon the creative AOR model altogether in favor of “more in-house and project-based agency partners.” This means that Droga5 has effectively lost the business.

Chobani, which signed the now-defunct Leo Burnett New York as AOR in 2011, moved to Droga in 2013; the agency’s “How Matters” Super Bowl ad then led to one of the year’s dumbest lawsuits, filed by the author of a book about the word. The agency’s most recent work for the client was a Halloween-themed spot that eschewed all things scary in favor of cute dogs eating yogurt.

As noted in the AdAge story, OppermanWeiss — which shares a connection to Chobani in former DDB Chicago CEO Peter McGuinness – will remain on its roster. The company did not give a definitive answer on Droga’s status and, according to a spokesperson, there has been no internal discussion about working with specific agencies on future projects.

The news apparently does not include any change in the statuses of GMR, Mars, OMD, and PR firm Weber Shandwick.
