Preparados?

Vogue Wins Magazine of the Year at National Magazine Awards

Vogue was named magazine of the year at the annual National Magazine Awards ceremony on Monday night, earning the award that honors brands excelling in both print and digital media as well as areas such as events and branded content. But it was Nautilus — an indie science magazine published quarterly that costs $49 a subscription — that set a record for the evening. Established in 2013 with a grant from the John Templeton Foundation, it became the first to win two National Magazine Awards in its first year of eligibility.

The awards were presented at the Marriott Marquis in New York and hosted by David Muir, anchor and managing editor of ABC News’ “World News Tonight.”

Let’s hope Nautilus doesn’t meet the same fate as last year’s indie darling Modern Farmer, which drew roaring applause when it won a National Magazine Award in its first year of eligibility. Last month the quarterly magazine lost its entire editorial staff and canceled its spring issue, though the title’s owner has promised it will return in summer with new writers and editors.

Ad Chat Super Bowl: John Kritch creator of "My Bold Dad" Toyota #SBads

Left; John Kritch celebrated the super bowl ad yesterday with two of his daughters who covered him in silly string. Right; John Kritch on set for the Toyota Camry ad directed by Nicolai Fuglsig.

John Kritch ACD/Art Director at Saatchi&Saatchi Los Angeles worked on the Toyota Camry super bowl spot, a spot that placed in several top ten rankings today. Adland flagged him down to ask about what it’s like to work on a super bowl ad.

Snickers leva a primeira edição do Clio Creative Bowl

snickers

Sprint Explains Its Apology by Goat

With the help of a bellowing goat, wireless carrier Sprint sends a shout-out to rivals Verizon and AT&T with this “super apology,” which aired during the third quarter of last night’s battle.

The ad from Deutsch LA aims at fellow carriers by saying sorry for calling competitors a goat, hence the featured animal in the advertisement, one that takes a jab at rivals’ expensive rates (calling them “sheep” in the process) while continuing Sprint’s “cut your bills in half” mantra.

Speaking to the Kansas City Star before the big game, Sprint chief marketing officer Bill Hallock said:

“We’re going to have a little fun with it. At the Super Bowl people look for some humor, some entertainment value…and that’s what we’ve embedded in this [ad] as well.”

All it takes is a screaming goat to hammer the message home:

In other Greatest Clients Ever news, Sprint’s CEO endured some friendly trolling via T-Mobile John Legere during the game…and retweeted many fans’ messages mocking the latter’s campaign by Publicis Seattle.

Look what @marceloclaure did to @JohnLegere…he’s all worked up cause Sprint has an awesome commercial and T-Mobile has Kim.

Big Bang MindBend

Hey Adbusters,

So you say you want a revolution … well … which one? Eviscerate neo-liberal corporate capitalism with its “personhood” succubus birthing unlimited political power? Or Cliven Bundy/2016? Topple dictators, tyrants, presidents-for-life, Communists, putrified Socialists? — ?all bubble-wrapped, encapsulated and immune to reality? Exterminate world-engulfing jihad superheroes (pick your preferred holy tripetrip)? Actually end endless warfare? Explode gluttonous consumerism elevated to existential sanctification? Repulse onanistic hedonism sold as life’s fulfillment and obligation (poor Epicurus, Bentham and Mill)? Vaporize vapid entertainment nakedly marketed as art? Halt global environmental trashing before we are all living on oceanic garbage gyres as the glorious culmination of 3.8 billion years of life’s evolution? Feed the starving? Homeland the homeless? Surmount the ramparts of wealth inequity?— ?99 to 1 and still ravenously yawning? Extirpate racism? — ?the taint that never washes out quite white enough? Perfume ethnocentrism — ?the primordial stink that clings to every “superior” culture’s rancid inhumanity? Demolish the hubris of speciesism inexorably leading to extinction (50% of the world’s wildlife have perished in the last 40 years)? Retreat from the joke of “genius” adulation that permits solo hyperinflated, single-note dwarves who allocate health, government, development and financial policies for the rest of us (Yeah, you … Gates, Jobs, Bezos, Zuckerberg and every other one-trick pony strutting the champion’s lap). Dare to drop your meth-fueled connectivity helmet impatient for the imminent Kurzweillian universal virtuality download and sit in the dark under a full harvest moon and think, imagine, invent, create, fantasize and struggle for self? Burn your XBox and shooter “games” and sleep in the snow with the aurora borealis as your widescreen? Clinically treat the delusion that stimulation is knowledge, knowledge is Google and kill social networks that breed more psychiatric pathology than human contact? For all you sexting dualists, reconnect the mind to the body? Neuter sexism? Nuke homophobia? Knit the anarchist multicolored coats of confusion? Fumigate the formulaic? Confiscate drum magazine assault weapons and Saturday night specials? Design a chic line of HazMat fashions? — ?resilient in the face of Ebola, Dengue, plague, HIV, smallpox, Chickungunya, SARS, MRSA?and all antibiotic resistant bacteria? Etc., etc.
So many revolutions to sign up for! All of them metastasizing. All of them intertwined and fecundatingly intermingling. All of them terminal to human touch. All of them must be won.
Adbusters touts itself as the “Journal of the Mental Environment.” How about concentrating the fusillades on the political, religious, ethnic, hidebound, moral obstruction and obtuseness of our addiction to growth at any cost.
The BIG BANG MINDBEND.
