Preston Kelly Shares ‘Another Reason Y’ for Twin Cities YMCAs
Posted in: UncategorizedMinneapolis agency Preston Kelly worked with production company 8th Street and director Jonathan Nowak to create a series of ads comprising its “Another Reason Y” campaign for the Greater Twin Cities YMCA.
Each 30-second ad imagines a different far-fetched and life-threatening situation in which YMCA-derived physical fitness comes in handy. In the above “Cement Shoes,” for example, a man is targeted by the mob and thrown off a bridge wearing cement shoes. Luckily for him though, he’s such a strong swimmer that he doesn’t sink. Other scenarios include a woman outrunning a bear, and a man struggling to escape up a tree when confronted by a cyclops. That last one feels a bit out of place in the campaign, due both to the mythical creature and that it highlights the man’s lack of physical fitness, while the other spots in the campaign highlight how working out at the YMCA can have you ready for anything.
“Everybody talks a good game, but clients with the courage to actually break through the dreck on TV these days are rare,” said EVP Creative Director Preston Kelly. “The YMCA trusts Preston Kelly to develop ideas that will get them noticed and gives us the freedom to work with the production resources to bring those ideas to hilarious, cringe-worthy, dramatic life.”

R/GA Enters the One Club Creative Hall of Fame
Posted in: UncategorizedThe One Club, an ad industry institution best known for honoring old white people since 1961, inducted five more agency veterans into its Creative Hall of Fame last Friday — and we have the pictures.
Readers will be most interested to know that inductees included R/GA founder/chairman/CEO Bob Greenberg. Here he is at Friday’s ceremony accepting the award from CCO Nick Law (all pics via Ric Callaher courtesy of The One Club):
…and here he is speaking to the crowd.
The org’s writeup praises Greenberg as “a pioneer in the advertising and communications industry for nearly four decades,” noting R/GA’s digital-first work for such clients as Nike and Beats.
The One Club also further illustrated the industry’s generational divide by naming Levine Huntley Schmidt & Beaver partner and “second creative revolution” vet Allan Beaver to the Hall. Here he is after accepting his award:
The night’s other honorees included Washington Olivetto, Chairman of WMcCann Brazil and CCO for the Latin American and Caribbean regions, and Lella Vignelli and her husband Massimo, who passed last May. The pair are best known for designing the New York subway system’s signage as well as logos for brands like Bloomingdale’s and American Airlines.
Vignelli was unable to attend the event, but here’s Olivetto:
Attendees included other top creatives such as (from left): Ted Royer, CCO of Droga5 and One Club Board Member; Pum Lefebure, co-founder and CCO of Design Army; and Andy Azula, Creative Director of The Martin Agency.
No word on whether Greenberg’s appointment marks a change in the unending digital vs. traditional debate — but for an additional bit of “how far we’ve come” nostalgia, here’s Nick Law telling former Spy Matt Van Hoven why discipline is the biggest challenge for agencies making the switch…circa 2009.

Anna Kendrick Meets Amy Schumer, and Won't Soon Forget It, in MTV's New Ad
Posted in: Uncategorized
We know how much you love Anna Kendrick, so here she is in yet another commercial where she gets to be funny and charming—this time at Amy Schumer’s expense.
Schumer is hosting the MTV Movie Awards in April, for which this serves as an early promo. Nothing too exciting happens, but it’s entertaining nonetheless. If nothing else, Kendrick has shown time and again that she can make something out of nothing.
“It was great to work with such a variety of comedians and actors in the campaign,” said the director, Kim Nguyen of Backyard, in a statement. “It’s fun leading them into different directions and providing an environment where they are willing to take chances and bring something different to each take. That collaboration really opened up so many funny possibilities that our entire crew was holding back laughter take after take.”
The MTV Movie Awards air on Sunday, April 12, at 8/7c.

Disney Considers Marvel, Star Wars Subscription Services
Posted in: UncategorizedWalt Disney is considering Disney-branded subscription services, including platforms for Star Wars, Marvel and ESPN, CEO Robert Iger said during the company’s earnings call Tuesday evening.
“There is definitely an opportunity not just for ESPN, but for other Disney brands to openly put products in the marketplace that reach consumers directly,” Mr. Iger said to Wall Street analysts. “We think we have that opportunity with Disney-branded service. We may have an opportunity to bring out a Marvel-type product and possibly even Star Wars.”
Still, Mr. Iger said Disney is in no rush to move forward with any such products.
Staples to Buy Office Depot in Deal That Consolidates Office-Supply Industry
Posted in: UncategorizedStaples agreed to buy Office Depot for $11 a share, or an equity value of about $6.3 billion, in a deal that would reduce the U.S. office-supply industry to a single major chain.
The two companies, which forged the merger after pressure from activist investor Starboard Value, would create a retail chain with about $39 billion in revenue and thousands of stores. The deal will draw scrutiny from the Federal Trade Commission, though regulators have been increasingly willing to approve retail mergers in light of burgeoning e-commerce competition.
Ron Sargent, CEO of Framingham, Mass.-based Staples, said the purchase would help it cope with a “rapidly evolving competitive environment,” letting the retailer expand into new product categories and cut costs.
This Demented Parody of '90s Ads Goes From Goofy to Horrifying in Seconds
Posted in: Uncategorized
The 1990s were quite the magical decade. And for those of us who were lucky enough to have been around then, we remember the weird commercials that peppered our Saturday morning cartoons.
“Every 90’s Commercial Ever,” made by digital movie studio RocketJump, is an amazing parody that filters these campy ads through an insanely accurate lens, replicating everything from the absurd acting to the ridiculous shilling of tooth-rotting, gut-busting snacks. Oh, and it also gets super weird.
Take a look at this commercial promoting some Capri-Sun-like and Bagel-Bite-esque foods, in the oddest thing since “Too Many Cooks.”
Warning: Video is violent and may be upsetting, particularly if you’ve ever been attacked a many-headed mutant.
Dez Dolly, a writer, director, producer and co-founder of RocketJump, is the brains behind the parody and explains his inspiration in the behind-the-scenes video below:
“We were talking about commercials from the ’90s—they’re so incredible—which you can now find on YouTube, and they’re absolutely incredible, they’re so bizarre. And there were these Capri Sun ads that we were talking about, where these kids drink the juice and then turn into liquid metal and splash around and skateboard and shoot hoops. They make absolutely no sense whatsoever, and we thought it would be really fun to start there, and then have the spot take this really dark turn.”
The BTS also gives some insight into how the spot-on ’90s-style glitchy visual quality was achieved and how VGP Effects made such terrifying creatures. Oh, and check out the (slightly more horrific) “uncensored version” here.
