CBS Starts Offering Its Signal Over the Web as Over-the-Top Gates Open

Just a day after HBO said it will introduce a direct-to-consumer streaming platform, CBS introduced its own digital service that will let viewers watch much of the network’s programming without a pay-TV subscription.

“CBS All Access” will deliver full seasons of most current prime-time shows, daytime and late night programming, as well as a library of older content, to subscribers whether or not they get cable or satellite TV. The episodes of current shows are available the day after they air.

Not all CBS programming will be available on the service. While shows like “The Good Wife,” “Blue Bloods” and “Survivor” will be available, hits like “The Big Bang Theory” are not included. It wasn’t immediately clear how popular sports such as the NFL would be handled — a major questions.

Sprite's 'Bill the Billboard' Keeps Drivers Entertained by Cracking Endless Jokes

If it’s more comedy you want from your billboard, Sprite is happy to oblige.

Ogilvy Kenya recently put up “Bill the Billboard” at a busy intersection in Nairobi, and programmed him to endlessly crack jokes. He’s sort of an outdoor version of the famous Pringles banner ad from 2009, offering seemingly stream-of-consciousness quips to keep viewers entertained.

The jokes aren’t exactly side-splitting, and the case study’s boast that Bill is the “first ad ever with mental issues” isn’t exactly P.C. But at least he’s a little different than your typical boring digital ad.

Consumers Buying More Disinfectants and Hand Sanitizers Amid Ebola News

The U.S. only has two confirmed cases of Ebola transmission in the U.S., but growing headlines surrounding the outbreak centered in West Africa appears to be fueling robust sales of disinfectants and hand sanitizers here.

Hand sanitizer sales were up nearly 8% for the four weeks ended Sept. 7, according to retail data from IRI, a reversal from a 2% decline for the 52 weeks ending then and better than the declines or low-single-digit increases seen for other types of soap.

Disinfectant sales were up 12.9% for the four and 12-week periods ended Sept. 27, according to Nielsen data from Deutsche Bank, a sharper growth rate than the 8% seen over 52 weeks. That’s despite a lack of any widespread flooding or other natural disasters that would usually explain such an increase.

Ms. Pattison, who was most recently CEO of Maxus in the U.K., succeeds Vikram Sakhuja.
