FOX and Nielsen: Ratings War No More

In what would have been quite the change of scenery for a major ratings draw, FOX recently threatened to leave Nielsen to go to exclusively with Rentrak for its measurement needs. In what resembled a real-life episode of 24, this imbroglio went unsettled until the last minute.

In short, advertisers (and our fellow agencies) don’t have to worry about altering subscriptions or anything, FOX is staying put.

The story from MediaPost tells us that this tiff between the two sources almost escalated into something nasty. The deal was announced just as Fox’s previous contract was set to expire, averting what would have been one of the biggest defections of a major TV stations group in Nielsen’s recent history.

Deputy Director Leaves TBWA

In a quick bit of staffing news before the long weekend, Deputy Director/Head of Account Management Justin Manfredi left his position at TBWA’s Digital Arts Network this week.

Manfredi, who worked in accounts at JWT, Deutsch New York/LA and San Francisco’s AKQA, joined TBWA approximately one year ago. The hire was part of a move the agency made to “ramp up” its digital West Coast staff in 2013. Manfredi joined along with 72andSunny/W+K NY alum Larry Lac, former Ignited analytics lead Eric Fader, and Vaino Leskinen of TBWA Helsinki.

Before joining TBWA, Manfredi served as Senior Integrated Account Director at David&Goliath. The agency describes his new role as “client side” work with Activision, but at the moment we have no details on title or responsibilities.

German Agency Thjnk Dares to Pitch Bono at Cannes…and Wins

Never underestimate the power of chutzpah.

Oddly enough, it took a German ad man to prove that point. One of the last stories from Cannes-Lions making its way into the headlines concerns the bold actions of Michael Trautmann, CEO of German-based Thjnk.

ICYMI, Bono was discussing AIDS awareness and his foundation (RED) when he brought Jony Ive, Apple Design SVP, on stage and gave the backhanded compliment heard ’round the hipster nation. Following the applause and passing of the Kool-Aid at Genius Bars, Trautmann did the unthjnkable.

And it worked.

Study Shows Readers Recall Tablet Ads at Same Rate as Print

A new study from GfK MRI Starch Advertising Research “found that ads in tablet versions of magazines have the same average level of reader recall as print magazine ads,” reports The Wall Street Journal.

The research firm studied reader recall of 28,624 magazine ads in 805 tablet magazine issues using an online survey, comparing the results to print recall data. Their survey asked respondents if they recalled reading certain ads and if they interacted with ads containing interactive features. Stick with us after the jump for the results. (more…)

NetApp Strives to Differentiate in Commoditized Business


Despite what it deemed a successful year of pushing its message through content marketing, NetApp still feels it could be doing more to reach buyers and influencers. In response, it’s planning to expand its content strategy and position itself as a business partner rather than just a technology provider.

Bottom line, data storage is fast becoming a commoditized service. And with NetApp’s core customer base spending over $1 million per year, it’s hard to differentiate on price. Now, the company is looking to highlight the less technical aspects of its offerings.

After over a year of customer research, and the aid of b-to-b focused branding agency Siegel + Gale, the $11.9 billion company has come up with a plan to differentiate itself: show that it is a trusted partner. While the specific vehicles of this new messaging are not yet sorted out, it will likely come in the form of content marketing and possibly some digital video. The first step, according to NetApp CMO Julie Parrish, is getting its employees and channel partners on board.
