Programmatic Buying Won't Be Complete Until TV Comes on Board

There’s no question that cross-channel marketing delivers results. And audience-driven programmatic buying has made cross-channel even more powerful. It turns out that planning, buying and running campaigns across channels, platforms and devices really is a more effective way to reach consumers with the right marketing message at the right time.

But I’m afraid it may be a bit too soon to start patting ourselves on the backs. Because there will be no real cross-channel marketing until TV joins the programmatic mix.

Even as marketers have come to appreciate the advantages of data-driven marketing, the absence of TV inventory on programmatic exchanges has left a huge gap in every so-called “cross-channel” marketing plan. TV still accounts for the lion’s share of every marketer’s budget, yet where ad planning, buying and reporting are concerned, TV remains set in its increasingly antiquated ways.

WPP's Xaxis Spends $25 Million To Build Its Own Data Management Platform

Online advertising runs on data, which is why a core piece of the value chain is the data management platform, or DMP, which allows brands to combine their own data with other sources for more accurate targeting.

WPP’s programmatic unit Xaxis has spent $25 million building one over the past 12 months, and is now offering it to clients.

“More than anything else, data provides leverage in a programmatic media buying world,” said Xaxis CEO Brian Lesser in an interview. “The more anonymous data you have about a user, the more efficient you can be about your buying.”

Incubating Your Own Products: Insane or Smart?

At one time or another, every agency has considered creating a commercial site that has nothing to do with its client work. Developing a new product takes time, focus and the ability to go into it with your eyes open. Yet when handled the right way, the payoff can be huge.

Here at AREA 17, we’ve done itseveral times. It has been part of our evolution from a design studio to a full-service agency, and has completely changed the way we approach our client work and relationships.

We embarked on our first product after a revelation. It was 2008, and we realized that we had experience with almost every aspect of a digital business except actually running one. That year, we decided to take our work one step further and create our own product so we could better understand our clients’ needs. We launched our first effortSubfolio, a simple tool designed to manage and present files onlinesoon after.

Dead Island 2 Trailer Isn't as Artful as the Original, but Is Still Plenty Horrifying

The 2011 trailer for the original Dead Island is one of the most notorious video game ads ever made. It won a gold Lion in Cannes that year, yet it was booed at the screening in the Palais and is certainly tough to stomach—though incredibly artful as well, as the reverse footage gave it an otherworldly and strangely moving sense of dread. (Adweek named it one of the year’s 10 best ads.)

This week at E3, the trailer for the much-anticipated Dead Island 2 was unleashed. It’s still plenty gory, though less haunting and more goofy-scary. The game’s setting is actually no longer an island but all of California, and the trailer takes place on a sunny boardwalk by the Pacific Ocean, as a jogger heads out for a run that quickly becomes infested with zombies.

This one won’t win any awards, but it’s a more than adequate reintroduction to the franchise. Now you just have to wait until 2015 for the actual game to come out.

Warning: Spot is graphic and may be disturbing to some viewers.

Unseen And Untitled Portraits Series

What Your Grocery Store Might Look Like in 2025: Different at Night

Picture this: A grocery store with shifting walls that transforms into a restaurant at night and a farmers market on Saturday mornings.

Sound far-fetched? It could happen by as soon as 2025, according to a new exhibit that seeks to predict food retail trends for the next 10 years. The predictions come from the Food Marketing Institute, which represents food retailers operating nearly 40,000 U.S. stores. The organization debuted the exhibit on Wednesday in Chicago as part of a sprawling trade show that it is hosting this week.

The exhibit was overseen by Tesser, a San Francisco-based brand strategy and design firm. In the video above Tesser CEO Tre Musco talks about the project, whose sponsors include Hershey Co., Coca-Cola Refreshments and American Express.

Truth Coffee

We made the traditional protector ring out of paper containing herb seeds, turning the disposable coffee cup into a pot… and the start of a basil, rocket or thyme herb garden.

We redesigned the cup using beautiful illustrations inspired by the idea itself – creating something people would want to keep. We gave the cup a life beyond its original purpose and added freshness and flavour to any city kitchen.

More importantly, because the cup is biodegradable, it can be planted in the ground and made to disappear forever – leaving behind a living, breathing, greener reminder of how a little bit of truth, can make a world of difference.

Summary: The job market today is like a dangerous wolf pit; only the strongest, fiercest, and most versatile make it through. The value of a well-earned degree is no longer what it once was; even a well-qualified individual has a hard time getting a well-paying job.
The only way to get ahead of your competitors is by setting yourself apart. Sounds easy, right? Surely you can prove that you are not like anyone else and are your own man/woman.

5 Reasons to Hire a Copywriter

Category: Hire & Higher
Summary: Many companies struggle with whether or not they should hire a professional copywriter to create marketing collateral, write print or online articles, or compose the sales letter that goes to their clients. Especially in a time when many companies are number crunching, this becomes a big debate — usually between the marketing manager, who understands the significance, and the CEO who doesn’t.
