Conde Nast Drafts an Internal 'Magna Carta' for Native Advertising

Conde Nast, publisher of Vogue and The New Yorker, has asked its editors and publishers to review a roughly 4,000-word document that lays out how the company will handle native advertising online, according to several Conde Nast executives.

The document’s aim is to give publishers and editors who might clash over native ads a quick reference guide to solve any disputes, the executives say. “There are things in there editors won’t like, and things in there that publishers won’t like,” one editor said.

In codifying its handling of the tactic — an editor called the document a “Magna Carta” for native ads — Conde Nast is breaking from rivals Hearst and Time Inc., which have avoided putting their policies on paper.

Let's Put a Stop to Starbucks Drinkzilla Arms Race Insanity

A guy named Andrew from Dallas is in the news for concocting and ordering a $54.75 drink at Starbucks. As Consumerist reports,

“Andrew set what is, as far as we can determine, a world record for the most expensive drink possible at Starbucks. Tamping down the previous known record at $47.30 is the Sexagintuple Vanilla Bean Mocha Frappuccino at $54.75. Andrew didn’t actually hand over that much money for his 128-ounce espresso milkshake. He’s a Gold member of Starbucks’ loyalty program, which entitles him to one free drink after every twelve that he buys.”

His local Starbucks barista let him bring in his own cup (that’s the 128-ounce part) and then brewed up 60 shots of espresso (that’s the “Sexagintuple” part) to mix with his other chosen ingredients to create a custom-made concoction. On his Twitter feed, Andrew doesn’t furnish his last name, but he did post a photo of his beverage along with a shot of a receipt for $54.75 — less a “reward” credit for the same amount — from Starbucks Store #6329 at 3699 McKinney Avenue in Dallas.

Seattle Cancer Org Urges You to Just ‘Do One Thing’

Well, we were somewhat intrigued by the pitch on this one, which read, “Cancer hospital hard at work putting itself out of business. One step at a time.” Come again? Well, not to worry folks, the message is not quite as self-destructive as it sounds, but rather a more eye-catching way of letting us know that the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance is turning its focus from treatment to prevention in its latest campaign (though we’re assuming treatment still remains top priority).

Dubbed “Do One Thing,” the new marketing effort for SCCA created by hometown agency Frank Unlimited veers away from the often preachy, overbearing overtones of many a health-related campaign and suggests instead to change just one habit then go from there. Hence the message:  “You don’t have to change everything. You don’t have to do everything. Just do one thing. Every day, pick one healthy thing, and do it.” We think we can vibe with the no-pressure mantra of this effort, which is  primarily aimed at adult women, 45+. After the jump, peep the animated clip from fellow Seattle shop, Kalakala, and New York Times op-ed illustrator, Drew Christie, that supports “Do One Thing.”

Las Vegas' Drai Beach Club Re-Invents the Pool Party

drai_beach_club.jpg

To tout he launch of the new Drai Beach Club/Nightclub which sits atop the the luxury boutique hotel, The Cromwell, in Las Vegas, mOcean put together this which aims to redefine just what it means to party.

Instead of black tie, we have black string bikinis. Instead of a dance floor, we have a pool floor. Instead of kissing, we have underwater canoodling. Instead of bravery, we have women shedding their bikini tops.

Basically, the a says “party in a pool.” It’s techno-fueled approach is nowhere near as good as The Cosmopolitan’s Bohemian Rhapsody-fueled approach. No doubt the place is cool and no doubt doubt we’ll check it out the next time we’re in Vegas. But not because of this spot.

Graphic design for social change

51k

The exhibition ‘Resolute – Design Changes’ in Breda shows the work of graphic designers who aren’t afraid to come to grip with burning social and political issues.

Their work goes beyond protest. The designers make us confront problems we’d rather not think about, they turn complex issues into clear and limpid posters, and some of them even craft tools that can be used for immediate action continue
