Our Cannes Contributor Chimes in Pre-Flight

While yours truly languishes in the humidity shrouding NYC as of now, we’ll be receiving daily Cannes reports from one Chris Zander, managing director/partner at Venice, CA-based prodco, Backyard. As he awaits his flight to the French Riviera, Zander, who will be be going rogue in a sense for the duration of this year’s Cannes Lions, tells us in his first submission, why go in the first place? Consider this an introduction post more than anything if you will. Stay tuned and you can follow Zander at @realchriszander.

Tonight, I’ll be on Delta 82 to Nice with half of the advertising world.  The next five days will be a whirlwind of dinners, drinks, villa parties, networking, late night dancing and late morning jogs.  This year my travel partner will be Kris Mathur, my good friend, Backyard’s esteemed executive producer, and the real Most Interesting Man in the World.

If you want the Cannes Ad Festival updates, you are in the wrong place.  I won’t be buying a delegate pass.  I tried going “official”  one year, and went to multiple sanctioned events.  It wasn’t for me.  I discovered that short list screenings were a perfect opportunity to catch up on sleep.

My guess is that at least half of the annual attendees are in Cannes as unofficial delegates.  Walk around the Gutter Bar before the sun comes up next Sunday morning, and you may see one or two happy people carrying around Gold Lions…maybe.  Trust me: if the crowd was limited to the award winners and delegates, the festival wouldn’t be nearly as fun, crowded, and colorful, and almost everybody would be asleep by midnight.  There would be nobody in the street to pose for pictures with the Leopard Ladies.  The energy level would be severely reduced, and the opportunity to be taken on day trips to Saint Tropez would we greatly diminished.

WPP Invests in Fullscreen, a ‘Buddy Media for YouTube’

WPP may have found its next Buddy Media. The holding company’s stake in the social marketing company earned WPP $62 million after selling to Salesforce last year. Now its digital investment arm WPP Digital has taken a stake in digital video network Fullscreen, whose CEO and founder George Strompolos described it as “one part a new media company with a massive creator network but also essentially Buddy Media for YouTube.”

Former News Corp. president and COO Peter Chernin’s The Chernin Group led Fullscreen’s funding round — adding to the group’s early 2012 seed-stage investment — and was joined by WPP Digital and Comcast Ventures, the investment arms of their parent companies.

Mr. Strompolos declined to disclose specifically how much funding Fullscreen has taken on with this round, but people familiar with the matter said it was in the ballpark of $30 million. All Things D had reported in April that Fullscreen was closing a $30 million round but only named The Chernin Group and Comcast Ventures as investors, suggesting that WPP’s stake is relatively small and in line holding companies’ typical minor strategic investments like the $5 million put into Buddy Media. WPP had previously invested in addressable TV advertising company Invidi and TV ad analytics firm Ace Metrix.

Campbell-Ewald CEO Bill Ludwig To Depart Detroit Agency

Here’s a puzzler: the same week an agency nails a big account, the CEO leaves.

Bill Ludwig, the chairman-CEO at Campbell-Ewald, is stepping down at the Detroit-based shop after more than 30 years, according to executives familiar with the matter. The agency is expected to tap an internal successor in a matter of weeks. The top contender for the spot? Jim Palmer, currently the agency’s chief client officer. Various other execs at the agency are expected to be promoted under Mr. Palmer.

Representatives for Campbell-Ewald said only: "The executive team at CE is in place." The agency’s parent, Interpublic Group of Cos., said: "It’s our policy not to comment on rumors, especially ones that involve individuals or personnel."

LSD ABC
