Don’t Damage Your Brand for Short-Term Gains in a Recession

Marketing is a long-term proposition. A company can get in trouble if it changes its marketing strategy to cope with a short-term problem.

Consumers Will Relate to Ads Urging Them to Spend Sensibly

Momentum is building for my advertising-stimulus plan. The latest (only?) guy to jump on the bandwagon is Bob Pittman, who's had plenty of heavyweight marketing experience at such disparate companies as MTV, Six Flags, Century 21 and AOL.

How to Handle Hiring When Everyone Else Is Cutting Staff

CHICAGO (AdAge.com) — Some agencies are actually hiring in this recession, which raises complications of its own: how to wade through the throng of highly qualified applicants, and how to navigate the tricky business of bringing on people to service a newly won account after you've let others go on one that's been lost.

How Toyota’s Confronting Low Consumer Confidence

DETROIT (AdAge.com) — As the head of Toyota Motor Sales USA's volume Toyota Division, Bob Carter is facing the same headwinds as the rest of the industry in today's turbulent economy. He recently sat down with Detroit Bureau Chief Jean Halliday to discuss the state of the car business and how he's navigating different pressures.

Agencies, Advertisers Scale Back Hispanic TV-Upfront Activities

Training Opportunity

A vacation for a senior adman is not just a chance to recharge batteries, it’s also an opportunity to see what you have one step below. Leave the up and comer in charge and see if he or she can handle making decisions as well as they do executing the plan. Give your contact info to just that one person, tell them it’s only for emergencies, and see how things look when you get back. It’s fabulous training.

Speaking of vacations, I’ll be on a family trip for a week and not posting. Be back around the 13th.
