How to Save the (ad) World

world.jpg

Since no one else (who has the power) seems to be saving your jobs (e-mail matt@mediabistro dot com if you’re a decision maker who doesn’t fit in this group), we came up with a very short list of ideas for turning this thing around.

Actually, they’re your ideas (you know who you are). We just stole them from another post and we expanded briefly on them. Let’s start something here &#151 post your industry-saving thoughts below, and check out what we had to say after the jump.

We’re having a hard enough time reporting on the layoffs after layoffs after layoffs, and it’s a safe bet to say you’re sick of hearing about them. So let’s do this thing.

Verizon Expects Continued Growth From Wireless Data Services

SAN FRANCISCO (AdAge.com) — The world's economic woes haven't caught up with Verizon Communications, if the latest earnings report by the country's second-largest mobile operator is any indication.

The transition from dorm-room debates to prime-time TV isn’t always easy, and that’s where pundit school comes in.

Pitch Sarah Lane (She’s a Free Agent as of Today)

Revision3 is making some changes to its lineup.

As you may have heard, today we had to make some tough staffing decisions as we ended the run of a few of our shows.

For our long-running Photoshop show Pixel Perfect, it’s the end of a show that’s done over a hundred episodes, and delivered essentially a graduate level course in graphic design and technique. For PopSiren and Internet Superstar, it’s the end of 2 shows that had great promise, but never really found their audience.

Sarah Lane, host of PopSiren, says it has something to do with the economic downturn. “Have you heard anything about this? I’ve been looking it up all morning but Google searches are coming up empty. Hardy har.”

Lane’s also curious if Invisalign is all that.

Ultimate Frisbee, Cenergy, IP And The Great Gamble

Liberal arts college geeks should get a kick out of this – sports company, Kan Jam (the the closest one can get to the ultimate frisbee gods), have selected their first AOR – Cenergy. Congrats to all, but here’s the very cool part – Cenergy will take an equity stake in Kan Jam instead of straight up cash for creation of digital and social-media advertising campaigns. Not to worry, Cenergy has some other big names clients including Oxy (see ad above), Comcast, Pearl Izumi and TBS.

Cenergy follows many an agency done the road of tying their flag to a budding business. If you recall, this was one of the big pushes of ad agency Anomaly. Other shops on this equity roster include Brooklyn Brothers and the iconic example of Kirshenbaum Bond & Partners who made some nice change pushing Snapple back in the day. Meanwhile, Crispin Porter has some stake in Method, the eco-friendly detergents cleaning brand.

Some may consider the equity race to be risky and hell, it is. We’re talking about the success of company who you just do the advertising, possibly the design for. You don’t get to pick the CMO nor how the budget will be spent. It’s a big risk, but in when it pays off? It pays of big.

Giant pale worms are not a kid’s best friend

CanexYorkshireTerrier copy

This print campaign by TBWA\PHS in Finland is intended to make you wonder if you’re actually feeding your dog—or the worms inside him. “Who do you take care of?” ask the ads, which promote Pfizer’s Canex All Wormer for Dogs. The visuals are pretty arresting, and the point’s well taken—if you like dogs. Frankly, I think those worms look darn cute, with their slimy trails and oozing maws. They’re right out of classic ’70s Dr. Who. Sure, they’re parasites. But so is Rover, always humping legs and begging for scraps from the table. At least the worms won’t shed. The kids are the creepiest part of the ads. They kind of resemble the mind-controlling tots in ’60s horror films like Village of the Damned, but with huge worms to do their bidding. Via Ads of the World, which has larger, oozier versions.

Slam Dunkin’

Dennis Hahn at ID Branding in Portland, OR thinks Dunkin’ Donuts could have reached deeper into its toolbox than to challenge Starbucks on taste.

…this campaign reeks of the same old tired ad-driven approach. And a taste test no less! Is this the best you could do?

According to Ad Age, the chain has gone after Starbucks before, poking fun at the snob factor associated with the premium chain.

At the dedicated microsite, DunkinBeatStarbucks.com, the chain appears to be taking a page from McDonald’s, which trumpeted the Seattle launch of its McCafe coffee business with UnsnobbyCoffee.com. At that site, consumers could stage an “intervention” for friends who were spending too much on their coffee. At the Dunkin site, consumers can “spread the truth” by sending e-cards with messages like, “Friends don’t let friends drink Starbucks.”

I don’t mind the taste test like Hahn does. There’s nothing wrong with a proven method, as long as you bring some fresh thinking to it. If Dunkin’ and their agency, Hill | Holiday, are to be faulted, it’s on execution, not strategy.
