FCC Intent On Closing The Digital Divide

The FCC, at Chairman Kevin Martin’s urging is paving the way for a nationwide network that will offer free wireless connectivity, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Wireless companies and some lawmakers have raised concerns about the plan, because the proposed auction rules appear to favor M2Z Networks Inc., a Kleiner Perkins-backed start-up that originally floated the free-Internet plan two years ago.

M2Z originally asked the FCC to give it a national 25 megahertz block of airwaves to build a national wireless Internet network. The start-up said it could pay for the build-out via advertising and a subscription-based plan for consumers willing to pay more for faster service.

100 million Americans currently lack broadband services.

Don’t Turn Drinking Into a Responsibility

"Drink responsibly." Talk about an oxymoron. Haven't we already got enough responsibility in our lives? Kids. Job. Clients. Decisions. Paying bills. Making deadlines. Watching your weight. Mowing the lawn. Filling the tank. Initiating foreplay. Then there's moral responsibility, civic responsibility, fiduciary responsibility. Don't you just want to say "Screw responsibility" sometimes? Those times were made for drinking.

BBH’s Zag Needs To Stop Zigging

scream.jpg
Bartle Bogle Hegarty has two new products coming out of their brand invention firm Zag: Pick Me – a vegetable ready-meal and a personal alarm system called Ila Dusk. The system is targeted at women and when used, emits a female scream rather than a siren.

Wouldn’t you love to see the data that made Zag think these two products were a good idea? Really, does the world even need more prepared food? The siren slash scream personal safety system – is that really invention? These questions don’t seem to matter to retail chain Tesco who has put Pick Me in 800 storefronts, nor Marks Spencer that has picked up the Ila Dusk. Apparently, BBH has data that says the noise of a woman’s scream has been “shown to elicit the strongest reaction from passers by.”

And yet, experts say that screaming is absolutely not effective. Jo Walker, spokeswoman for the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, the personal safety campaign group said: “We advise people to try not to scream, because bystanders have no idea how to react. You should shout instructions, such as, “Call the police!” – it has been proven this has more of an effect.”

Neither of these products sound like a good bet. These are remixes of old ideas in very crowded marketplaces. You guys aren’t zagging. You’re zigging alone with everyone else.

Say Bye-Bye: The Freelancer Crunch

crunchOFF.gif

The ad community is feeling the crunch. Crunch! Can you hear it? Crunch! Crunch! We’re moving into the final fiscal quarter for the year and everyone is trying to make that bottom line, look good for the Adweek Agency Reports and to their holding companies.

Some shops are laying off the full-time employees and bringing in consultants per account won. On the other hand, a couple of weeks ago, a bunch of freelancers were chopped from various shops as a way to tighten up the bottom line. WE HEAR THAT… Publicis shops Burnett and Arc Worldwide cut close to 100 freelancers. WE ALSO HEAR THAT… an agency-wide email went out asking employees to work through the weekend to make up for the loss of those freelancers.

If you’re a freelancer, head over to this site and get some advice on how to weather the financial downturn. And if you’re hiring part-time freelancers to make up for staff that was cut, head over to Adland and find out how to keep them happy.

TV Ad Spend Cutbacks: 0h $h!7

2008-02-us-ad-spending.jpg

The Wall Street Journal today reports low 3rd quarter ad sales for the national TV markets, specifically for Viacom (which projected a 3 percent loss for Q3) and CBS (predicted a jump from 14 to 18 percent down over Q3 2007).

“The disclosures come as ad executives are seeing more cuts in already-soft ad spending, as a result of the upheaval in global financial markets. ‘We see reductions coming from all sectors,’ said Maurice Levy, chief executive of Publicis Groupe SA, one of the world’s largest ad-holding companies.”

As a result, many of the holding companies are withholding their Q3 reports. No big surprise there, since local TV ad sales are down 4.4 percent over Q1/Q2 of this year. Sigh. Pair that with another WSJ story that indicates large ad-holding companies are tightening up in other areas as well, most importantly to you, personnel. Omnicom, Starcom MediaVest and Landor are mentioned, but look locally and you’ll see a higher propensity of the same behavior in smaller markets.
