Spotlight On NW Creative: UGreekRow.com
Posted in: UncategorizedI have to admit I’m no fan of the Greek system on college campuses, but I’m going to overlook that fact in order to showcase UGreekRow.com, built by Portland’s Intrigo, experts in interface design and application development.
Eric Nelson, who works at Intrigo, describes the new soc net and its potential for success:
They’re entering a market in which they’ve seen a couple other competitors launch within their niche hoping to capitalize upon the success of social networks, trying for that get rich quick bandwagon type mentality. Meanwhile, the guys at UGreekRow have taken a completely different approach, focusing on how their product can improve the lives of Greek members. Instead of taking your run of the mill social networking features and pasting them onto a niche site, they’ve spent countless hours researching and meeting with Greek organizations and members. Their goal was to understand the biggest challenges and needs of the Greek system.
In other words, UGreekRow.com is a custom built tool set, unlike Ning. If you were running a startup wouldn’t you want the best tool set money could buy?

Posted in: Uncategorized‘Sinking (in quick) Sand at JWT Inside’
Posted in: UncategorizedToday marks another bad moment in the agency world, with reports that JWT Inside has laid off another round of employees from various agencies nationwide. JWT representative Erin Johnson confirmed employees have been let go, but could not comment on the number or geographic location of the losses. She did inform us that they were due to “cuts in client spending.”
According to a source close to the issue, “Seattle, New york, atlanta, dallas, california — not sure if LA or San Fran or both” all suffered employee cuts. We’re told that fewer than 15 people total will be going home without jobs.
Per our source, the agency has been in ‘denial’ about the layoffs, and rather than inform employees about the loss instead sent around a notice that JWT Inside recently won some Web awards (recall this Sept. 29 announcement: “JWT INSIDE Recognized with Ten WebAwards Including Best Intranet Web Site”).
Here’s hoping this clears things up for everyone there.
This is the second round of layoffs for the agency in recent months, the last occurring in late July.

Posted in: UncategorizedArt Directors Club 2008 Inductees
Posted in: UncategorizedThe Art Directors’ Club has announced their entries for the ADC Hall of Fame. This is a big deal y’all. Like, really big. Yeah, it’s that big. OK so maybe you’re more concerned about the stock market surge which was immediately crapped upon by the tech slump, but whatevs.
Making this year’s list of inductees are (insert throat clearing) Alex Bogusky, who works out in Colorado or somewhere; Ray Eames (posthumous), designer, architect, filmmaker; Sir John Hegarty, chairman, worldwide creative director, Bartle Bogle Hegarty; Maira Kalman, illustrator, artist, designer; John Maeda, president, Rhode Island School of Design; R. Roger Remington, Massimo and Leila Vignelli Distinguished Professor of Design, Rochester Institute of Technology and Bruce Weber, fashion photographer.
Apparently, the inductees are going to be erm, inducted, during a black tie gala benefit dinner on November 6th. Sweet — here’s hoping we get invited.

Demonizing Print to Promote Web Services – Paper is Evil Snaptax Ad (GALLERY)
Posted in: UncategorizedPlease Don’t Dominate The Rap Jack If You Got Nothing New To Say
Posted in: UncategorizedThe same Ad Age article that I just referenced mentions another brand-sponsored YouTube show called POPTUB. POPTUB purports to offer “YouTube stars, the best viral videos, undiscovered gems, and your favorite celebrities.”
YouTube Reviewed doesn’t care for the series.
Judging from their videos, POPTUB is about as in touch with YouTube as your mom.
Do we really have to watch yet another corporate-sponsored YouTube clip show come along and claim to present “undiscovered gems,” when all they really do is promote the same tired shit that is already sucking the life out of the site?
You all can’t be serious, right? Are you geniuses really doing a “ratings” review of the most viewed, most discussed and most responded videos on YouTube? Really? Sounds like a great fucking idea. I mean, it’s not like there isn’t already a MOST VIEWED, MOST DISCUSSED AND MOST RESPONDED LIST PROMINENTLY DISPLAYED ON THE SITE!
COME ON!
I could say something lame in POPTUB’s defense, like “there are no new ideas.” Except that’s not true. There are new ideas.
