NFLatino spots give great dramatic lighting

Nflatino

Man, people who speak Spanish get all the cool stuff. Not only do they have excitable sports commentators and accordion-heavy ranchero music, but according to this NFLatino spot from The Vidal Partnership, they get personal spotlights in which to deliver epic dialogue sequences. I want one of those! We can cut the overused classical battle-scene music, but I can’t tell you how often a spotlight would come in handy for me. Maybe I should watch NFLatino. They might raffle one off or something. See another spot here. Via Ads of the World

False memories but real brand experiences

Brain_copy
Giving people a personal experience of your brand may be easier than we thought. Apparently, when it comes to personal experiences, people are prone to just making them up. A study at the University of Portsmouth in England found that 40 percent of those questioned had false memories about the London bombings of 2005. As many of us here in the U.S. think back on 9/11 this week, we may also be experiencing false memories of where we were that day. Of course, tragedies aren’t the only things that cause us to make false memories. In a 2001 experiment at the University of Washington, researchers showed people a fake print ad in which a person describes shaking hands with Bugs Bunny at Disneyland. A third of the participants later recalled the event as if it had happened to them. Wait, does all this mean I didn’t actually see Bill Gates buying shoes at my local Shoe Circus? Via Boing Boing.

The near-perfect world of old fast-food ads

Oldkfc Given the recent surges in obesity, ads like this KFC classic from 1980 are strangely quaint. Which makes sense, as those were more innocent times. Pac-Man and CNN were new, I hadn’t been born yet, and Richard Pryor was still alive and extending his act another few years by setting himself on fire during an attempt to freebase cocaine. How were we to know that years of eating what may or may not have been chicken fried in lakes of grease would turn those apple-cheeked kids into guys like this 28 years down the line?

Ghostly figures give Weight Watchers a try

Lose4good

Weight Watchers has introduced a campaign that unintentionally fuses elements from a few other recent AdFreak favorites. Mix the health-conscious public nudity of Blue Shield of California with the socially aware Jessica Alba duct-tape session of Declare Yourself, add in the goal of squeezing into those Levi’s mini promo jeans—and you’ve sort of got Weight Watchers’ “Lose for good” initiative. (McCann Erickson may really regret that tagline if the business ever goes into review.) The work features a video showing translucent tape sculptures of women in a New York City park. According to Adweek.com: “Before long, puzzled passersby examine the figures and start touching and manipulating them.” Yep, that’s a New York City park for you. There’s a tie-in to raise funds to combat global hunger. That’s nice, but it can’t compare with unwrapping the tape to find Jessica Alba inside.
