Google Indexes AdSense Copy

I noticed that AdSense ad copy gets indexed and shows up in Google’s main search results. Are there any particular implications? If you bought an AdSense ad on a high-ranked site (can you?), would it push this site up in the search results for the keywords in the ad copy?

Copy in an AdSense ad on DomainTools: “Build Your Site from Scratch, Redesign, or Enhance. No Setup Fee.”

Google’s search results for the phrase. The DomainTools page with the ad is third result from the top, but other sites featuring the same ad appear in the index as well.

Say Anything

13135__say_anythiing_l.jpg

Alright folks. Mediabistro has gone ahead and done actually something worthy of an online media company. They’ve made it easy to comment. Hoorah! It’s only 2008. Sheesh.

All you gotta do is click on the “login” on the comments link at the bottom of a post. A window will ask you to login or register. First time users should (natch) click register and put in an email address and select a password.

If you don’t plan on commenting ever again, then go ahead and make up an email address. If you do, fill out your dummy account’s email addy, so you keep me track and have conversations, blah, blah, blah.

I’ve had a few hard headed haters of the MB comment system give it a go. They all seem quite pleased. They even left comments! Hot damn!

So, I ask you… please give it a try? Say anything! Say something! We miss you guys. It’s so much less fun without the comments.

Boston’s Got A New Man In Charge

Digitas has Boston has gotten a new boss. Glenn Engler has been named the president of the agency’s headquarters. The Tufts graduate was previously executive vice president, leading the agency’s General Motors and XM accounts. Before coming to the agency, Engler was a senior partner at CDI and Mercer Management Consulting. The release informs us that he: “he led strategy engagements for Fortune 500 companies in the broadcasting, media, entertainment, publishing, retail and automotive industries.”

Whoa-ho. Those are some serious credentials. Based on the video above, that’s just what those Beantown kids need – a heavy hand to get them back behind their desks where they darn well belong!

Feel The Dream: A Electronic Moment for Amnesty International

The people over at Feelthedream.org have organized an event of massive proportion to commemorate the 45th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have A Dream” speech this Thursday, August 28th. It’s all a benefit promoting the efforts of Amnesty International, but in a significantly more subtle fashion than we usually see from Amnesty.

FeelTheDream is asking DJs/promoters/party organizers to incorporate the iconic speech into a climactic moment during a set on Thursday night (or over the upcoming weekend) to remember and promote the words of Dr. King. A simple idea that brings a bit of global unity to the table to promote positive social change. And it’s simple enough to facilitate. Check out the Feel The Dream website for more info.

And take a look below at Fingers Inc. (Larry Heard)’s classic dance mix that Feel The Dream is using as their primary promo track.

You Make How Much?

Have you guys been over to Glassdoor.com, a site that allows people to post their salaries anonymously? After reading a quote from the website’s founder, Robert Hohman, in the Sunday business section of the Times, I decided to check it out. Lo and behold! Advertising salaries galore! Keep in mind that the site does take into account locality, so its best to consider the average of each number rather than individual entries.

Avenue A and Digitas, the two big behemoth interactive agencies, have been heavily covered. Let’s start with the Razorfish, yes? Thirty employees have entered their data into Glassdoor including Creative Directors all the way down to the nuts and bolts Information Architects. The average salary of a CD at Avenue A? Drum roll, please… $132,500. A Senior Copy Writer? From this loose and fast data, the average looks to be $95,500.

Over at Digitas, where 47 people have entered their salaries, a VP Group Creative Director is averaged out at $174,250.

DraftFCB also has some bodies talking cash. Ten people have bothered to report on the shop’s paying practices. An account executive is making somewhere around $49K.

Agencies such as JWT, Leo Burnett, BBDO, Schematic, AKQA are listed, but don’t have enough entries to determine averages. So what are you waiting for? Go over there and fill out some data. Consider it a service to your fellow brothers and sisters in the ad trenches who are currently negotiating raises and bonus structures.

Updated: JWT Detroit Parts with Dominos Field Marketing

za.jpg

Our spies are working to confirm that the state of Michigan has lost yet another account. That is, JWT Detroit may have been dumped by Dominos &#151 the agency had only been handling the pizza maker’s field marketing operations.

JWT became Dominos AoR back in 2002. However, the business went up for review in June of last year, as we reported. Later that year, in September, AdWeek reported that Crispin won the biz in a review over Martin and GSD&M Idea City.

No word yet on where the business is going, if it has gone anywhere at all.

Update: “This is old news…..Domino’s took the biz in house. Some of the JWT field people were offered positions, the rest were laid off.”

(ed’s note: Our spy said that no one seemed to notice or care the loss of business. Probably because it was expected and he/she wasn’t privy to that information before it went down.)

Getting Shoppers From Search to Store

What's the difference between national and local advertising? Draw two columns on a piece of paper, and you can probably list quite a few differences. But online they start to disappear. Sure, the original assumption about how the internet would affect brands — that e-commerce would triumph over traditional retailing — hasn't exactly panned out. But don't let the failure of e-commerce to replace local bricks-and-mortar shops obscure a more important trend: the impact of the internet on in-store sales.

CE Layoffs that Weren’t

this_is_now_outside_our_office_by_icyfra.jpg

We’re told that Campbell Ewald may deliver the aforementioned layoffs this week instead of last, because they only perform such atrocities at the end of a pay period. And though it isn’t our intention to scare people, we wouldn’t feel right about it if they did happen, and we had kept the information to ourselves.

As it is, we’re told that the agency is losing people left and right. With the first round of layoffs from a few weeks ago, addies are jumping ship before they can get let go. As such, the Alltel account, which just started to recover following Jeff Scott‘s departure could once again be in jeopardy.

And with only Chevy being handled properly, insecurity about the agency’s future is rampant. This isn’t to say the shop could shut down, rather it would have to have a smoke and possibly a glass of scotch before making anymore decisions. Chill out people, the shit still has some time before it hits the fan…or the fountain.
