Daddy’s Credit Card Accepted Here
Posted in: UncategorizedRoughly 18.3 million students will enroll in U.S. postsecondary institutions this fall, up 26% from 14.5 million a decade ago. The discretionary spending of these 18- to 30-year-old students is estimated to reach $53 billion this year, a fact which is leading several aggressive retailers to establish pop-up retail locations on college campuses.
According to The Wall Street Journal, flip-flop maker Havaianas, a brand owned by Sao Paulo Alpargatas SA, plans to set up a temporary “pop-up” store on five campuses in the U.S.
Victoria’s Secret’s Pink, a young women’s clothing brand of Limited Brands Inc., this fall is opening its own pop-up store at about 12 schools, up from 10 last spring.
Sustainable-clothing brand RVL7 is installing a bamboo-clad temporary ministore at six to eight campuses this fall, including the University of Colorado at Boulder and Arizona State University.
These stores are brand builders, but they also move merchandise. Kiehl’s Since 1851, a skin and hair-care company owned by L’Oréal SA, says its college pop-up stores perform “on par with what our normal store would do” in daily sales per square foot.

Side Note: Advertising Employees And The Election
Posted in: UncategorizedWhile we are all busy planning, producing, shooting and coding the next big campaign, there’s a little thing called the Presidential election happening outside the office doors. In an article about Obama’s recent trip to Richmond an advertising executive got some press lines:
“Rye Clifton, an advertising executive at the Martin Agency, stands in Starbucks by the glass doors opening into the hotel. When Republican-nominee Sen. John McCain was in town in June, Clifton tormented Shockoe Espresso, a coffee competitor two blocks down the street, by retrieving the still-full mug McCain left behind. He sold the “mug of lies” on eBay for S213.61 and donated it to Obama. The incident so angered the manager of the coffee shop that he banned Clifton from returning.”
Go on Rye! I’m not sure which is more surprising: that he made it out of the office long enough to get in some guerrilla action or that someone paid two hundred smackers for the mug?
Clifton is also the guy behind the video, which took Unilever to task for pushing the pro-women message of the Dove brand with one hand, while the other is totally rubbing some T&A with Axe. Love it.

‘Daily Show’ No Laughing Matter for Democrats at Convention
Posted in: UncategorizedBlogging Gets Its Turn At The Plate
Posted in: UncategorizedMajor League Baseball is spending $65 million this fall to advertise its postseason action, according to The New York Times.
When Major League Baseball was looking for a pitchman last year for the postseason, it turned to the social networking site MySpace and found that Dane Cook, the comedian and actor, had a lot of friends.
This year M.L.B. and its playoff and World Series broadcast partners, Fox and TBS, decided to showcase a different aspect of life on the Internet: blogging, which will be a common thread in the 20 or so advertisements.
Each spot is a juxtaposition of baseball history and new media, with bloggers conjuring up moments like Bobby Thomson’s “Shot Heard ’Round the World,” Carlton Fisk’s walk-off home run in Game 6 of the 1975 World Series and Kirk Gibson’s hobble around the bases in the 1988 series.
The message is meant to be that even if your favorite team is out, you can tune in the playoffs to see something potentially historic.

This ad was posted in the Chicago section of Craigslist, but apparently, they’ll pay to relocate to Atlanta. While this ad is posted through the very reputable Creative Circle, it still smells sketchy-mcsketchy. If you’re feeling bold or just curious, get the full details here.
5. Account Director, CPG – Lowe Worldwide, New York, NY
You know the drill – you’re going to need a Bachelors degree, a minimum of 8 years account management experience and at least 2 years of experience on a consumer packaged goods account. Oh and let us not forget – “a positive attitude and a sense of humor.”

‘The Shield’ Deserves More Respect

Let's cut right to the chase today, shall we? "The Shield" is by a continent-wide margin the best cop/detective show currently on television. Come with me, then, as I lapse into fanboy mode and attempt to articulate, using words like "awesome" and "unreal" and "super-amazing," why fans of "Deadwood," "Chinatown" and "The Departed" ought to treat themselves to a belated introduction to "The Shield."
