Losing value, the penny still keeps its pride

Pennies
As inflation revs up (wholesale prices rose an alarming 1.1 percent just last month), the humble penny is worth even less than before. But it still exerts a kind of loyalty that would make many brands envious. In a Harris Poll released this week, 56 percent of adults opposed abolishing the penny, while 24 percent were in favor. Another 20 percent were unsure. (Maybe the pollster should have pressed them with a nickel for their thoughts.) Women, penny-pinchers that they are, were more likely than men to oppose getting rid of the coin (62 percent vs. 49 percent).
