Cherokee Nation touting more than casinos

Not every Native American tourist destination is a gambling casino, despite what the tons of advertising for places like Foxwoods might lead you to believe. The Goss Agency of Asheville, N.C., has created a new campaign to drum up interest in the cultural attractions of the Oklahoma-based Cherokee Nation—hence the reference in this ad’s headline to the Broadway incarnation of Oklahoma (or, rather, Oklahoma!). See other ads from the series here. Readers are lured to a Web site that gives info on tours, cultural sites and the like. (The options do include “gaming,” naturally.) Goss had already been handling advertising for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, who are situated in the agency’s home state. Another ad in the Oklahoma series, displaying a vintage photo of the Cherokee Senate, notes that the tribe’s government was modeled after the U.S. government. “Before lobbyists, of course.”
