The Good Fight Creators on Tackling Trump and Les Moonves, and Why There’s No Place Like Home

CBS All Access doesn’t have the breadth of original content that streaming rivals Netflix and Hulu do, but it’s worth the subscription price just for The Good Fight, which Adweek named one of 2018’s best TV shows. That’s largely due to the work of co-creators and showrunners Robert and Michelle King, who have turned the…

ALDI: Teatime Takedown

Online
Aldi

A staggering 38% of British children refuse to sit down at the family dinner table, according to new data commissioned by Aldi, with over a quarter of UK parents blaming online gaming for this phenomenon.

As a champion of bringing families together round the dinner table, Aldi is launching an online service to help parents restore that all-important family dinner time.

Introducing Teatime Takedown – a new online service created by McCann UK that enlists an elite squad of professional gamers, who parents can call upon to enter into their kid’s game and take them down, prompting them to put down their controllers and join the dinner table.

Aldi will use clever marketing to reach parents directly, first through a promotional film that will roll out across channels from digital to social and media from radio to out-of-home and even in-store on the back of till receipts. The service will speak straight to parents on Netmums and popular recipe websites. It’s also really simple to use. All parents need to do is sign up via Facebook by inputting their children’s gamer IDs and a desired date, and if online at the right time, the kids will be freed up to join the dinner table by the team of world-class gamers.

Facebook data deals reportedly face criminal investigation: Thursday Wake-Up Call

Welcome to Ad Age’s Wake-Up Call, our daily roundup of advertising, marketing, media and digital news. You can get an audio version of this briefing on your Alexa device. Search for “Ad Age” under “Skills” in the Alexa app.

What people are talking about today

Hungary’s government has been encouraging couples to make more babies, and it put up some billboards featuring a lovey-dovey couple to get the point across. But whoever designed the ad picked the wrong stock art, as Orla McCaffrey writes in Ad Age. The man and woman in the ad are famous for modeling in the ubiquitous “distracted boyfriend” meme; he played the guy ogling a random woman, and she played his disgruntled girlfriend. They’re basically the poster children for bad relationships — which made it hilarious to see them in an ad touting family values. Oops.

U.S. esports digital ad revenue will break the $200 million barrier next year, per new report

As esports keeps creeping towards the mainstream, more brands are jumping in. In a report issued today, eMarketer projects that digital ad revenue lured by competitive video gaming in the U.S. will jump 25 percent this year to $178.1 million. By 2020 it will reach nearly $213 million, according to the report, which includes ad and sponsorship revenues from organized esports events, such as Overwatch League, hosted on digital platforms.

Brands are starting to realize the potential of targeting the mostly young esports audience, said Paul Verna, principal analyst at eMarketer. “Esports fans have unique characteristics that make them more elusive but potentially more lucrative for marketers,” he says. “They are typically young, TV-averse millennials who have higher-than-average disposable income.”

EMarketer projects that 30.3 million people in the U.S. will watch an esports at least once a month this year, an increase of 18 percent from last year.

A campaign from Hungary's government evokes a meme, to hilarious effect

Hungary’s government took out billboards to encourage couples to have more children. Now the ad is going viralbecause it’s unintentionally hilarious.

The billboards show a happy couple locked in an embrace. If they look familiar, it’s because they’re the same pair made famous by the “distracted boyfriend” meme. In that viral stock photo shot by Antonio Guillem, the woman is outraged as her boyfriend looks at another woman. A photo of the billboard was picked up by local media and shared on social media.

Last month, the government of populist Prime Minister Viktor Orban said women who have at least four children would be exempt from any income tax. And women under 40 who marry for the first time will also be eligible for a $35,000 loan, which will be waived after the birth of a third child.

Shopify embarks on first retail partnership to aid d-to-c brands in physical stores

Having a physical presence for customers to see or try on goods has become a key strategy for direct-to-consumer brands looking to expand their reach off social channels.

Shopify, which has powered the rise of d-to-c brands with the ability to set up and manage e-commerce stores, has increasingly added more services for its 800,000 merchants to expand into physical retail if they so choose with in-store technology and in-person support.

Now, Shopify is taking the next step with Showfields, a permanent physical retail space that caters to d-to-c brands looking to experiment in the brick-and-mortar space by launching pop-up shops. Starting on March 15 and running through May, Shopify is designing spaces for select merchants on its platform at Showfields’ permanent location at 11 Bond Street in New York City.
