Williams-Sonoma accuses Amazon of copying its furniture

Williams-Sonoma Inc. sued Amazon.com Inc. in a challenge to the online retailer’s private label push that started with batteries, baby wipes and phone chargers and has expanded to include clothing, toys and high-end furniture.

Amazon’s “Rivet” line includes products that are “strikingly similar” to Williams-Sonoma’s West Elm brand, including a $300 orb chair the household goods maker introduced two years ago, according to Williams-Sonoma’s complaint.

“It is implausible Amazon could have conceived of a product line with nearly identical product designs which feature product names containing the very same non-descriptive terms WSI uses in connection with these products, other than by intentionally undertaking to copy WSI’s West Elm product line,” according to the suit.

Twitter is 'toxic place for women,' says Amnesty International

Women have been telling Twitter for years that they endure a lot of abuse on the platform. A new study from human rights watchdog Amnesty International attempts to assess just how much. A lot, it turns out.

About 7 percent of the tweets prominent women in government and journalism receive were found to be abusive or problematic. Women of color were 34 percent more likely to be targets than white women. Black women specifically were 84 percent more likely than white women to be mentioned in problematic tweets. After an analysis that eventually included almost 15 million tweets, Amnesty International released the findings and in its report, described Twitter as a “toxic place for women.”

The organization, which is perhaps best known for its efforts to free international political prisoners, has turned its attention to tech firms lately, and it called on the social network to “make available meaningful and comprehensive data regarding the scale and nature of abuse on their platform, as well as how they are addressing it.”

NBC chief hints that company may unveil Netflix-style service

NBC Universal’s boss sent a holiday greeting to employees this week, and it contained an intriguing hint about the coming year.

Steve Burke, head of the Comcast Corp. division, suggested that the company might unveil an online TV service in 2019 — though it’s hard to know how seriously to take a message written in the rhyming style of Dr. Seuss.

“While you all go off to relax, swim or ski,” Burke wrote. “Maybe, just maybe, next year we will announce our plan for OTT.”

Real Christmas tree marketing campaign continues amid supply shortage

Christmas tree growers are pushing forward with their annual campaign, even though there is a supply shortage this year.

“It’s Christmas, Keep It Real,” a marketing push developed by the Christmas Tree Promotion Board, a tree grower-funded entity under the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is now in its third year. The social media videos for 2018, developed with agency Concept Farm, focus on seven families picking out their Christmas trees, a switch from 2017’s grower-centric campaign, according to Marsha Gray, interim executive director of the Christmas Tree Promotion Board. In one video, a mother talks about the experience of getting a natural tree and finding the perfect fit for her family. In another, a woman laughs at her partner’s lack of understanding that ornaments need attached hooks in order to hang on tree branches.

But unlike previous years, the supply of trees is tight this year, thanks to more cautious planting during the Great Recession a decade ago. Now that the trees from that time are family-room ready, some consumers have complained of a shortage.
