Comcast soars the most in five years after profit tops estimates

Comcast rallied the most in more than five years after its focus on improving internet service paid off in the third quarter, with the largest U.S. cable provider posting a big increase in broadband subscribers. The company added 363,000 internet subscribers in the period, a 70 percent increase from a year earlier. Comcast has had only one previous quarter in the past six with larger broadband customer gains.

The growth should ease investor concern that broadband is slowing and shows why much of the company’s capital is going toward network upgrades. It’s now the biggest U.S. provider of gigabit speeds.

The pay-TV business remains tough, with video subscribers shrinking as more U.S. customers go for cheaper options such as AT&T’s DirecTV Now. The U.S. video losses are a reminder why Comcast is paying $39 billion for Sky Plca pay-TV company in Europe, where cord-cutting isn’t so prevalent.

WPP has a 'tough' Q3; blames weakness in creative agencies and North American operations

WPP stock dropped steeply Thursday after the world’s largest advertising holding company posted worse-than-expected results for the third quarter, citing weakness in its creative agencies and in its North American business. The holding company has also suffered a recent string of client business losses.

Reported revenue in the quarter was down 0.8 percent to 3.76 billion, with a like-for-like net sales decline of 1.5 percent. Investors reacted badly. WPP shares tumbled on the release of its results to the lowest level since 2012. Shares were down 15 percent in late-day U.K. trading.

WPP results come the week after peers Omnicom, Interpublic and Publicis published third quarters that were generally positive.

Twitter cleanup sweeps away 9 million users, but ad sales up

Twitter’s audience is down by 9 million people, but that’s good for advertisers.

On Thursday, the media messaging app released its third-quarter results which showed a monthly active user base of 326 million people, down from 335 million in the prior quarter. However, that’s what Twitter’s advertisers and investors were expecting since the company has been focused on purging bad actors, harassers and fraud accounts.

“We continue to make really steady progress against some of the health initiatives that we’re seeing,” said Jack Dorsey, Twitter CEO, during an early morning call with Wall Street analysts.
