Amigos for Kids: Broken Crayons

Abused children often hide subconscious clues of their situations in classroom drawings. Unfortunately, many of these signs are discovered too late. To shed light on this, we opened an exhibit in the heart of Miami Art Week, where unsuspecting visitors were exposed to art with a hidden twist.

Hoda Kotb Says 'Never Look Back,' Then Becomes Matt Lauer's Official Replacement

Half an hour into 2018, NBC News anchor Hoda Kotb tweeted three words, three hearts and an image containing three more words that neatly distilled how a lot of people have been feeling lately: “never look back.”

She could have used different words (e.g., “Fuck you, 2017!”), but Hoda Kotb is much too nice a person to be so blunt.

And then this morning, this happened:

Enter Your 6-Second Ad or Branded GIF in the Creativity Awards' Short-Form Category

We’ll keep this quick: The Creativity Awards this year has introduced a category dedicated to short-form work.

The Short-Form Featured Category will honor the best of tiny but might attention-grabbers, the biggest successes in formats that have become increasingly important in an era of ad avoidance, be they memes in marketing, GIFs by brands or very quick video hits.

“We like the idea of encouraging all advertisers to use TV advertising and this is a way to do it,” Fox Networks Group executive Suzanne Sullivan said last summer, when Fox started selling 6-second ads in its broadcast of the Teen Choice Awards.

These Silent Autoplay Ads on Facebook Are Helping People With Hearing Loss

Soundtracks can drastically change the emotional tone of a video. BBR Saatchi & Saatchi cleverly leverages this fact in a campaign for an Israeli nonprofit serving people with hearing loss. Three ads for the group, known as Bekol, use Facebook’s in-feed video format, which runs automatically but stays silent until clicked, to pair striking visuals…

The Case for Responsible Innovation

Is technological innovation good or bad? Seems like a silly question on the surface. But we have questions: Can self-driving cars ever be safe? How dangerous is Alexa? Will artificial intelligence take my job? Do cryptocurrencies empower terrorists? Can a cardiac pacemaker be hacked?

We have concerns: Fake news, fake ads, fake accounts, bots, foreign governments interfering with our elections

The courts have historically decided that technology is neither intrinsically good nor bad, but they have expressed the opinion that people must be responsible and held accountable for how it is used. The problem is that technology is almost always ahead of strategy, tactics, and the law.

Marketer's Brief: Taco Bell Finally Gives In, Sells Fries

Pass it on

Pssst have you heard? The Association of National Advertisers announced today it would be acquiring the Word of Mouth Marketing Association, a marketing trade group founded in 2004. ANA CEO Bob Liodice says the deal would help ANA increase member services in WOMMA’s areas of expertise. It follows other acquisitions in recent years of groups like the Business Marketing Association and the Brand Activation Association. Terms were not disclosed. A major driver in co-founding WOMMA in 2004 was a frustration that the major industry associationsANA, IAB, DMA, 4A’swere not adequately addressing the ‘non-paid’ media landscape, says Pete Blackshaw, head of digital innovation and service models at Nestle, who was a Nielsen executive when he helped found WOMMA. “We also felt a critical need to establish a high industry bar for word-of-mouth ethics and social media disclosure, which I believe WOMMA delivered with excellence,” Blackshaw says. ” ANA appears to be embracing both fronts, so it’s hard not to imagine positive outcomes coming out of this.” He added that the move comes as consumer testimonials, reviews, ratings, social media engagement and other forms of online or offline word-of-mouth grow in importance.

YouTube's Unlikely Peacemaker Plans to Make Musicians Rich

The music executives hobnobbing with Ed Sheeran and Selena Gomez at an industry party one recent November night knew the enemy was in their midst. Susan Wojcicki runs YouTube, the site that’s let millions of fans listen to their favorite songs without paying a dime.

But Wojcicki, a 49-year-old Silicon Valley insider, was at the soiree to extend an olive branch. Escorting her around the room and introducing her to Mary J. Blige and Camila Cabello was her guide, the man YouTube has entrusted with mending its ties to record labels and artists: veteran label executive and manager Lyor Cohen.

Weeks later, YouTube had new revenue-sharing agreements with the two biggest labels, deals it needed to launch a subscription music service in 2018 to compete with Spotify and Apple. Negotiations had been underway for months, but Cohen felt Wojcicki’s presence in Los Angeles would underscore YouTube’s commitment to the music industry.
