The Honest Marketer's Guide to CES

Every year, marketers are inundated with trend reports about the Consumer Electronics Show. Most of these reports have nothing to do with consumers, electronics, or the annual Las Vegas show; instead, they promote the topics that most excite the pundit.

This report deconstructs the typical ones. It might be the only truly honest one you’ll read, written by someone who has attended CES and written these kinds of reports for more than a decade. Here’s the real story behind the so-called hottest trends of CES 2018.

The Golden Globes Red Carpet Show Will Be Livestreamed on Facebook

Last year was supposed to be a big year for Twitter TV. The social platform inked numerous deals–from business news video content like Cheddar and Bloomberg to sporting events like National Football League games–but one of the most compelling arguments was that there was prime opportunity for awards shows, pop culture’s catnip, to tap into…

Donald Glover Says Season 2 of Atlanta Will Be More Like Tiny Toon Adventures

The freshman season of Donald Glover’s FX comedy Atlanta was a critical and commercial hit, but Glover said audiences shouldn’t expect more of the same when the series returns for Season 2 in March. “We didn’t look back at Season 1 for inspiration,” Glover said at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour. “If you…

Dannon taps a new quarterback for Oikos team

Dannon and its Oikos brand of Greek yogurt quickly severed ties with Cam Newton in October when the Carolina Panthers quarterback said it was “funny” to hear a woman asking about football routes. Now the company, the official yogurt sponsor of the NFL, has drafted Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott to star in its new “Fuel Your Hustle” campaign for Oikos Triple Zero Greek yogurt. And based on a TV spot, Prescott has two cute dogs, a fridge neatly stocked with produce and, of course, lots of Oikos Triple Zero. The creative work comes from what Dannon refers to as DanTeam US, which includes WPP’s J.Walter Thompson, Wunderman and Geometry.

Twitter Just Kind of Subtweeted Trump

Twitter has faced plenty of criticism for not holding President Trump to its Terms of Service, allowing him to remain on its platform even though he’s done plenty of things (e.g., bullying, threatening violence*) that would get an average user permanently banned.

If you were thinking that Twitter might eventually cave, given that the president’s tweets seem increasingly unhinged (see “Trump’s North Korea ‘Button’ Tweet Increased Risk of a Nuclear Attack and Was ‘Highly Stupid,’ Congressman Says,” per Newsweek), guess again. In an official Twitter blog post titled “World Leaders on Twitter” and bylined “By Twitter Inc.,” the social media platform this afternoon laid out its justification for failing to de-Trump itself:

Nike's 'Reverse Auction' Review Is Bad Omen for Agencies

Nike is taking a fresh look at its digital agencies with a “reverse auction” style global review in which it is collecting rate information, signaling it could put more pressure on fees. The sportswear giant recently initiated the process via its global procurement department, according to a document obtained by Ad Age.

Roster agencies are being asked to provide new information on their rates and capabilities. Nike then plans to run a “reverse auction sourcing event” for agencies and update its agency contracts with new pricing. Reverse auctions are generally frowned upon in the agency industry as a signal that clients are seeking the lowest bidders. The fact that a high-profile, marketing-driven company such as Nike is using the process could be a bad omen for the agency world, which is struggling to adapt to rising pressure from clients seeking lower rates.

Reverse auctions “are typically reserved for commodity-based industries,” said one agency executive who has worked with Nike. The company’s move to deploy one with agencies is “a very dangerous and slippery slope.”

McDonald's CMO Bullish on Tiered Value Menu Amid Competition

Can winning back customers be as easy as 1, 2, 3? McDonald’s is about to find out.

The Golden Arches kicked off the national marketing of its new $1 $2 $3 Dollar Menu on Jan. 4 with traditional and social media campaigns meant to educate customers about its latest value play with humor.

The lineup of four items each at $1, $2 and $3 could help the leading restaurant chain win back customers it admits have headed elsewhere. One often-quoted statistic from McDonald’s came at a March investor meeting when executives said the chain had lost 500 million customer visits since 2012.

Lotus Herbals: #SparkleEveryday with #LotusMakeUp

Lotus Make-Up has launched its first brand video to promote its unique make-up range, and establish itself as a strong competitor in the cosmetics industry.

The premise for #SparkleEveryday campaign is largely that the modern woman of today is done and fed up of dealing with stereotypes and justifying herself in a rather male dominated world.

Conceptualised and executed by WATConsult, India’s leading and most awarded digital and social media agency, part of the Dentsu Aegis Network, the campaign focuses on how Lotus Make-up is an enabler for women from various walks of life.

The campaign idea is to show how the modern women break all the stereotypes to sparkle everyday in their life. By showcasing a photographer, cricketer, and stand-up comedian, the brand clearly states how women are sparkling in every sphere.

Audi: Safety Code

Drivers who are distracted by their phones are a huge problem that causes thousands of accidents each year. Still, 8 out of 10 drivers use their phone whilst in traffic which is quite alarming considering that a 2-second distraction is long enough to increase the likelihood of a crash by over 20 times. Now, just before Christmas – one of the busiest holidays of the year on our roads – Audi is presenting a solution. Instead of asking drivers to stop using their phones or block the use of them while in the car, they are asking the world’s website hosts to help out making the roads safer.

The project is called Safety Code which is a free code snippet that can be used by anyone who has a website. By applying the code to their website’s scripts, the site analyses the visitors’ GPS-position to determine if they are driving. If they are at a speed over 20 km/h, the site will be blocked until the visitor confirm that they aren’t the driver of a vehicle in order to continue to surf the site.

Safety Code is the first solution where website hosts can contribute to a safer road environment. Audi.se is already using the code and now Audi is releasing the code to the public at https://safetycode.se/eng with the hope that more sites will follow.

See Colbert's and Noah's 'For Your Consideration' Ads for Trump's 'Dishonest & Corrupt Media Awards'

In the wake of President Trump’s announcement that he’ll be giving out what he’s calling the “Most Dishonest & Corrupt Media Awards,” at least two of TV’s late night hosts are angling for the, uh, honors.

Trevor Noah of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” and Stephen Colbert of CBS’s “The Late Show” have each released “For Your Consideration” ads pitched to POTUS. We’d call them “fake ads,” but in Trump’s America who’s to say what’s “fake” even means anymoreplus Colbert went a step further and actually booked some real time for his ad on a Times Square digital billboard, as seen in the “Late Show” clip at the bottom of this post.

Gentlemen, good luck to both of you!

There’s No Stopping Peak TV, as 487 Scripted Series Aired in 2017

In 2015, FX Networks CEO John Landgraf coined the phrase “Peak TV” to describe the overwhelming amount of TV available on broadcast, cable and streaming platforms. That year, a then-record 422 scripted series aired on those outlets. But Peak TV still isn’t close to peaking, according to new estimates from FX’s research team that Landgraf…
