Spark: Celebrate Family

Following the launch of ‘Little can be huge’ earlier in August, Spark have come out with the first of many stories extending moments from their launch ad with the help of Colenso BBDO.

Dubbed ‘Celebrate Family’, the film is an emotional take on Spark’s ‘Little can be huge’ platform. Colenso CCO, Levi Slavin, says it’s a story about how a little thought, a little online research, and a little effort can make all the difference in the world.

The film tells the story of a single mum and her 10-year-old boy in the weeks leading up to Father’s Day. Mum does her best not to show it, but we can tell that this is a particularly difficult time of year.

The Folkoperan Opera House: An opera made of orgasms

Swedish Opera House, Folkoperan, is known for their award-winning provocative themes: This autumn they are putting on Turandot by Puccini, originally released in 1926. The overarching theme in the opera is desire; Turandot’s admirers have such an overwhelming desire they would rather die than live without her.

Folkoperan wants to celebrate this boundless desire with a promotion where people of different sex, age, origin and sexual orientation orgasm in the tune of the opera’s own climax – the aria Nessun Dorma.

Droga5 Dips Into the Verizon Roster to Find Its First Chief Design Officer

Droga5 recently turned to the dark side to find the new head of its design department: the client side.

Today the agency that no one will admit to being jealous of announced that Jason Severs would be its first-ever chief design officer.

He joins the Droga team from Verizon, where he spent the last year-plus as director of experience design and strategic initiatives. His new role is similar in that he will look to expand the agency’s Creative Technology, Experience and Brand Design teams at its FiDi headquarters.*

“For this new role at agency, we needed someone with ambition, compassion and talent to oversee three of our most crucial departments” said Mr. Droga himself. “Jason is fortunate to inherit talented individuals who are leading our design departments, and I look forward to his contributions to our continued success.”

Before joining the telecom giant last year, Severs spent more than a decade with frog, formerly known as Frog Design. He was ECD at the studio’s New York office and also led its global experience strategy offering.

Here’s his statement:

“We are aggressively designing the world around us. It’s critical we leverage design to create meaningful experiences and drive innovation in a way that helps brands break through, while also being relevant and respectful to our rapidly evolving human experience. Creative agencies such as Droga5 are looking to increase their impact on clients’ businesses with communications and content designed for engagement. I’m excited to join the team at Droga5 and look forward to building.”

In his spare time, Severs teaches classes to masters program students at the School of the Visual Arts.

Can You See Me Now: Apple iPhone's Facial Recognition Excites Brands

Apple’s facial recognition technology is both sleek and creepy, and advertisers want in.

On Tuesday, Apple revealed the iPhone X, its next-generation device packed with sensors and high-tech add-ons like Face ID and augmented reality. Face ID is the security measure that unlocks the screen using nothing but a person’s face.

The technology is impressive–Apple worked with Hollywood studios to test the software with lifelike masks to verify it couldn’t be hacked with even the most sophisticated replica face–but the privacy implications of the phone mapping people’s moods is a “little off-putting,” says Noah Mallin, managing partner at MEC Wavemaker.

Apple Upgrades TV Box to Stream Higher-Quality Videos

Apple upgraded its Apple TV set-top box to handle higher-quality video as competition from Amazon, Roku and Google heats up in the living room.

The new Apple model can stream 4K video, which is much higher resolution than standard 1080p video, from the iTunes movie catalog and other apps such as Netflix and Amazon’s video service, Apple said during an event Tuesday at the its new headquarters in Cupertino, California. The box will also support HDR video, which shows a more accurate representation of colors. It starts at $179, versus $149 for the current model. The new box will be available for order on Sept. 15, Apple said.

The updated box, called the Apple TV 4K, has a new processor that’s twice as fast as the existing box and four times faster for graphics. Apple also previewed deeper integration of live TV, allowing users to navigate between live news and sports streams via the company’s new TV app.
