Oh Henry!: Crack a Wrapper

With the sheer number of brands talking about Canada’s 150th birthday, Oh Henry! decided that focusing on the nation’s pride and history was a sure way to get lost in the clutter. Instead, we focused on something that Canadians would actually be thinking about when it comes to celebrating the nation’s birthday: beer.

Four Quarters of 'Marshmallow News,' And Other Reasons General Mills is Hiking Spending

General Mills Inc. will increase advertising and media spending in its current fiscal year as it tries to limit its sales declines, even though it’s not expecting much near-term improvement in the categories in which it plays, the company said Wednesday.

After deep cuts in media spending in fiscal 2017, plans for fiscal 2018 include a double-digit increase in outlays for the Nature Valley snack line, which is rolling out more than 20 new products, more emphasis on Old El Paso, and campaigns in yogurt and cereal.

General Mills managed to impress investors with a better-than-expected profit and sales that fell less than anticipated in its fiscal fourth quarter, which ended in late May. Its shares were trading about 2% higher on Wednesday.

Trump Attacks the 'AmazonWashingtonPost' Over Taxes

Donald Trump attacked the entity he referred to as the “AmazonWashingtonPost” in a tweet Wednesday morning, the latest attempt by the president to cast Amazon Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos’s ownership of the Washington Post in a nefarious light.

There are a number of stories currently running prominently in the Washington Post that could make Trump unhappy; the newspaper is reporting that GOP senators are unafraid of him and that his lawyer’s family has been paid millions from charities it controls. But the story that seems most likely to irk the president personally is a piece by long-time Trump scourge David Fahrenthold exploring why the president’s golf clubs are displaying a phony Time magazine cover.

While it’s hard to parse his tweet for specific meaning, it’s likely he’s resurfacing a criticism he’s made about Amazon’s tax practices in the past. In December 2015, Trump unloaded on the Washington Post, describing it as a tax shelter that Bezos uses to keep Amazon’s taxes low. Without tax shenanigans, Trump argued, Amazon’s stock would “crumble like a paper bag.”

Google Likely to Appeal $2.7 Billion Fine For 'Abusing its Dominance'

Google looks likely to appeal the hefty $2.7 billion fine it has been ordered to pay by the European Commission today.

The penalty is for “abusing [its] dominance as a search engine by giving illegal advantage to its own comparison shopping service,” according to an EC statement.

Google has been fighting the EC on this issue since the first complaints were made in 2010, and the internet giant continues to maintain that it is not doing anything wrong.

The CMO's Guide to Ad Boycotts

“Bachelor in Paradise” will resume its drunken hookups on ABC despite allegations of sexual misconduct on the set. Bill O’Reilly will experiment with taking his news commentary online after getting fired from Fox News.

In other words, the countdown is on for the next potential ad boycott.

A politically turbocharged environment that just won’t quit is making media a minefield for advertisers, which have bailed this year on YouTube, “The O’Reilly Factor,” political news sites, an episode of “Sunday Night With Megyn Kelly” and a Shakespeare play. There’s a heightened sense of caution among marketers for anything morally, ethically or politically controversial. No one wants to be the next Pepsi.

Scripps, Time Inc. Among Media Companies Starting Shows on Amazon's New Echo

Streaming video services are sometimes called “over the top” because they skip over the cable box to reach consumers. Now publishers are going over the counter top with original programs for the new Amazon Echo that comes with a screen.

On Wednesday, Scripps Networks Interactive’ Food Network and Time Inc.’s People introduced apps for the device, called the Amazon Echo Show.

“It actually solves one of the key challenges consumers have with voice alone, which is you can’t look at it,” said Al Ming, director of product management for Scripps Networks websites, apps and emerging platforms. “If you can’t look at it, you’re probably not going to decide to eat it.”

WPP Client Info Looks Safe, but Ransomware Attacks Can Mask Data Grabs

Wednesday’s ransomware attack presented itself as a money grab by hackers, asking its targets to pay up in exchange for getting their computers back. And though there’s no sign that there’s more to it at this point, one analyst is warning agencies to remain on guard, because attacks like this sometimes go further than they seem.

WPP CEO Martin Sorrell, whose giant agency holding company was one of those rocked by the attacks, said there is “no indication that either employee or client data has been compromised.”

But previous attacks in other industries have sometimes sought more than just money, according to Jeff Pollard, principal analyst at Forrester.
