Apple: The City

Apple debuted “The City,” the latest film from the Practically Magic campaign focusing on the iPhone 7 Plus Portrait Mode. In the film, a young couple meets up on the crowded, noisy streets of Shanghai when the young man raises an iPhone 7 Plus to take a photo of the woman. When he slides the camera into Portrait mode, the world around them empties of people and the congested streets and noise falls away. As the couple sets off for a day in this magically transformed landscape, they take portraits using the Portrait mode feature, free to indulge in their growing affection without distractions.

Today, we use our phones to capture the most important moments and people in our lives. “The City” demonstrates the functionality of Portrait Mode to eliminate distractions and help you to focus on what you love.

Those Bud Frogs Hop Across the Pond with Help from mcgarrybowen London

D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles introduced a trio of talking frogs for Budweiser back in 1994, a concept developed by copywriter David Swaine and art director Michael Smith. It later became one of the best-known beer campaigns ever, even though DMB&B lost the business and left GS&P to keep it going with new characters.

Now, to introduce A-B InBev’s Bud Light brand in the U.K., mcgarrybowen London is bringing them back…or one of them, at least. “Bud” makes a return in his new British pond, with his old pals replaced by new friends who croak out “Light” and “Beer.” Hey, it worked once, right?

“More than 20 years on from its original release, we still receive comments from people who remember the Frogs and ask us if we are bringing them back,”  Bud Light marketing manager Andre Finamore said in a statement. “The launch of Bud Light in the U.K. is one of AB InBev’s biggest-ever brand campaigns. To celebrate this, we’re playing on the nostalgic elements of one of our most iconic and memorable ads, while also giving it a uniquely Bud Light twist.”

Below is both the original spot and an early ’80s ad for Seattle’s Rainer Beer called “Frogs” that bears what some might call an undeniable resemblance to the Bud work.

São Braz Coffee Shop: Do Not Shut Up

A traveling exhibition was put together to bring people closer to the elements that are part of child labour exploitation. We provoked a reality check to motivate people to look around more and to reflect upon it. The strategy worked: it drew in schools, parents, classroom professors and civil society. The exhibition has traveled around Brazil, bringing thousands of people to realize the importance of speaking up.

At Cannes, 8 Jury Presidents and 43.5% of Judges Are Women This Year

The number of female judges at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity has doubled in the last five years to 43.5% for next month’s festival, and for the first time, eight of the 23 jury presidents will be women.

This has been a hot-button issue for years. Until 2014, just one in five Cannes judges were women, and there were only one or two female jury presidents each year.

Since then, the festival has introduced programs like See It Be It, which invites 15 future female creative leaders to the festival each year, and added the Glass Lions category in 2015 at the suggestion of Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg and LeanIn.org to recognize work that promotes more equal gender representation. This year, the festival has agreed to caution jurors not to recognize work that reflects gender bias.

Carlsberg – The Danish Way (2017) :60 (UK)

Carlsberg - The Danish Way (2017) :60 (UK)
Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen flies around on a bike through this ad while pondering what it is that makes Danes the happiest people in the world. Let’s forget for a moment that Danes take a lot of psychotropic meds and anti-depressants which may have something to do with it (see OECD), and enjoy the ride. “Is that we keep work and life in perfect balance?” Mads asks as he cycles through Amalienborg Slotsplads and people rush out on the street. “Is it that we make time for hygge” he asks, thereby teaching us that very special Danish word for having a cozy time. It means exactly the same thing as the Dutch word gezellig, but both nations insist that only their language has such a word. Mads cycles through a house, saying Godaften to a lady in bed, slams through her closet and past the Carlsberg elephants making sure to not show the swastikas on them. Inside the Carlsberg factory he samples the beer: “Or is it that we brew what we believe is the best beer in the world?” Probably.

I love how “probably” has returned and is so well used here.

KBS Picks Up Belvedere Vodka's Global Creative Account

Belvedere Vodka has hired KBS as its global creative agency of record, a nice win for the MDC Partners shop after a recent dip in revenue.

KBS, whose U.S. revenue fell 12.7% last year according to the Ad Age Datacenter, picked up the luxury spirits brand following a competitive review, according to people with knowledge of the situation. The pitch was managed internally without a consultant, they said.

Leanne Banks, global communications director for Belvedere Vodka, confirmed bringing on KBS as its creative agency, but declined to provide further comment on the relationship. According to the people familiar with the situation, KBS will handle both so-called above-the-line duties such as mass-media advertising and below-the-line promotional work.
