MRM//McCann Goes Through a Round of Layoffs in Its Salt Lake City Office

This week, the Salt Lake City office of IPG direct marketing agency MRM//McCann went through a round of layoffs due to unspecified business changes.

An agency spokesperson confirmed that the downsizing had occurred but declined to elaborate.

“Yes, our MRM//McCann Salt Lake City office recently made some adjustments in staffing levels and capabilities,” the spokesperson wrote. “Some good people will be leaving us and we are working with them to ensure the smoothest transition possible.”

According to the parties who alerted us to the news, just over 50 employees were affected. The reason for the move is unclear, though one source points to a change in the agency’s relationship with longtime client Sam’s Club. Reps for the retail chain have not yet responded to email queries regarding the account.

The office’s website includes several open job listings, and we do not have any specifics on who will be leaving.

The last major change at McCann’s direct division came about a year ago, when Verizon consolidated its FiOS work with indie shop Rauxa. MRM later parted with its CEO and several other top executives, and it has yet to name a new lead after naming McCann Worldgroup president of diversified agencies Bill Kolb to oversee its 40-plus offices around the world.

Breasts Sing Their Own Praises in Freaky Follow-up to Famous ‘Manboobs’ Ad (SFW-ish)

One of 2016’s surprise ad hits was agency David’s “#ManBoobs4Boobs,” a breast-cancer awareness campaign that cleverly got around social media’s ban on female nipples by demonstrating a self-exam on a male model instead. The work, created for Argentina’s Breast Cancer Help Movement (MACMA), won a slew of Gold Lions across various categories at Cannes last…

Ad Industry Powers Consider Adopting Ad Blocking on a Wide Scale

The biggest players in advertising and tech are mapping out a strategy to kill off the digital ads that have been deemed as the absolute worst by consumers.

The most likely approach is the adoption of a “technology” — the term “ad blocker” has baggage among many of the participants in talks on the subject — that would prevent browsers such as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge from displaying autoplaying video ads with sound, pop-up ads and ads that quickly flash or change colors.

The discussions are taking place among members of the industry’s Coalition for Better Ads, including Google, Microsoft, Procter & Gamble, Unilever, WPP’s ad-buying giant GroupM, Facebook, Thomson Reuters, The Washington Post, the Interactive Advertising Bureau and the Association of National Advertisers, according to Chuck Curran, counsel to the coalition and attorney at Venable LLP.

Honda and RPA Return to the Old, Reliable ‘White Dude Rapping’ Beat

What better way to spend the dumbest fake holiday ever than listening to a bro spitting rhymes, yo?

Earlier this week, RPA released a new PSA for longtime client Honda that takes a new approach to an old problem: texting while driving. As you guys know, agencies have released a wide variety of work addressing this serious societal issue, from “Don’t Be a Zombie” to this messed up emoji sculpture by Magnacom Worldwide and, of course, BBDO’s “It Can Wait” for AT&T.

But this one is all about how you need a “Designated Texter” while riding in your fly auto and trying to refresh your FEED.

The little Instagram review moment was fun.

And who hasn’t asked someone else to jump on their response to a group text because they really need to focus on making that left turn ahead without wrecking mom’s ride? Nobody?

This might be the first awkward white people doing hip hop spot we’ve seen since Periscope’s January effort for the Minnesota Lottery. And there’s no better way to get The Kids hyped up on your viral campaign than having the five-oh share it.

Yeah, the second dude isn’t white. But he doesn’t do much rapping, either.

Veja abaixo:

Help us create the next issue of Adbusters

Hey all you writers, artists and designers out there,

I am looking for alternatives. Every time I try to jump back into this world, I am disappointed.

How can I go on knowing that every time I engage with the capitalist-corporate machine I am contributing to environmental destruction, war, poverty and suffering? How can I sit back when the only way I can engage with people on the other side of the planet is by exploiting them?

I need a new world that celebrates difference, a world that sees diverse traditions as beautiful manifestations of the human spirit. I need a world that burns borders, that dissolves them by whispering to the person on the other side, “I am with you, I respect you, tell me who you are and we will work together.”

Send me art that defies borders. Send me ideas that respect the differences between us. Show me how musicians, filmmakers, writers, visual artists, dancers, cooks, creators and collaborators are re-imagining this world in the here and now.

Send your most powerful creations to editor@adbusters.org or artdirector@adbusters.org for inclusion in the next issue of Adbusters — no later than April 27.

Let’s build a new world in the shell of the old!

– Kono for the Blackspot Collective

The CEO of WPP China Is Stepping Down to Run Her Own Startup Incubator

Bessie Lee, the CEO of WPP China, is resigning to focus full-time on a company she founded, a startup incubator and early-stage venture fund investing in areas like mobile advertising, big data, analytics and social media.

Lee founded China-based Withinlink in 2015 and has been splitting her time 60-40 between WPP and her entrepreneurial project. Withinlink recently closed an inaugural fund of 55 million yuan (about $8 million), with investors including media executives, wealthy individuals and government bodies.

WPP said Patrick Xu, the current CEO of GroupM China and a former marketer with Mondelez, P&G and Danone China, will add the WPP CEO job to his role starting May 2, after Lee’s departure. WPP also has a China country chairman, veteran adman TB Song.
