2 New Movie Trailers From This Week Show How Hollywood Is Evolving the Format

There’s been a movement in two directions over the past few years in how movie trailers are edited and assembled.

They’ve adapted to new media platforms and audience tastes to more effectively and efficiently sell movies to audiences, making sure to present a product that has maximum appeal, showing a movie that is absolutely worth … whatever the call to action is. That might be dropping $10 and three hours at the theater, it might be the cost of a VOD rental, it might be the decision to maintain or begin a Netflix or Amazon Prime subscription.

Two bits of movie marketing from earlier this week show a couple of ways in which trailers are changing to get people’s attention.

Twitter - See What's Happening - (2016) :30 (USA)
Twitter continue to create TV commercials for the US audience in the hopes of luring more users to the platform. This ad touts Twitter as a window to the world, but seems to forget that North America isn’t 90% of the world. It just is in this commercial. It starts with a bigger view, Japan, India, Brazil and then a – to me – jarring image of Amsterdam & a bike. NEEDLE-SCRATCH, hold up, what does that say? “Hvad sker der?” That Danish, not Dutch where you would say “Watskeburt?” or maybe “Hoe gaat het?”

Now I know both Denmark and Holland have cutesy capital cities where riding a bike is part of the cityscape, as I’ve lived in both cities and therefore know both of these languages, but how on earth did you get them mixed up? You couldn’t arrange a more “clueless American tourist” feel to an ad if you tried. What’s happening is you not paying attention to the details, Twitter. That’s what.

How Marketers Can Help Keep Good Ads Off Bad Sites

When clients invest in a digital advertising strategy, they need to be assured that they’re getting exactly what they pay for. Many clients are global brands with reputations that took decades to build, and in an age where trust is everything and reputations can be tarnished in an instant, clients often worry about how and where their ads appear online.

Via purchased inventory on ad networks, sometimes brand advertising unwittingly appears on undesirable websites, such as those devoted to the illegal distribution of pirated movies and TV shows. Sometimes ads that look legitimate are actually Trojan horses carrying malware: hidden, malicious programs that steal valuable information from users’ computers or mobile devices. And sometimes, legitimately purchased ads don’t get shown on websites at all: instead they appear on sites that will never be viewed by a human, a practice known simply as “ad fraud.”

It’s imperative to protect brands from these criminal activities by establishing best practices and prioritizing known and safe preferred publishing partners for our clients’ investments.

Snapchat's Mysterious 'Snap to Unlock' Ads Start to Pop Up

Snapchat marketing codes are starting to appear in the wild, inviting people to scan them with promises of promotional add-ons inside the app.

These are Snapchat’s new twist on old QR codes, which had a brief flirtation with relevance about 5 years ago. The QR code, it’s worth remembering, was a digital marker that consumers could capture with their smartphones, directing them to special offers and other mobile marketing promotions.

Now, Snapchat has turned the concept into an ad format called Snap to Unlock. Brands put the codes, which look like Snapchat logos, on billboards, in stores or on products for people to scan.

Twitter Surges on Report It's Said to Be Closer to Sale

Twitter shares soared the most in more than two years Friday after CNBC said the company may soon receive a takeover offer.

The beleaguered social media company is engaged in conversations with potential suitors that are said to include Salesforce.com Inc. and Alphabet Inc. unit Google, among others, CNBC said without citing its sources. Twitter may get a formal offer shortly, sources told CNBC.

Speculation that Twitter is ripe for a sale has been swirling for months as the company has failed to lure new users, leading to several quarters of stagnant growth and a plummeting stock. The shares were down almost 20% this year before the surge Friday. The shares were up 18% to $21.99 at 9:38 a.m. in New York.

Five Ways Agencies Can Figure Out Their Role in Content Marketing

If there’s one thing our industry can’t get enough of, it’s buzzwords. We love our jargon and because we use it so often, words often are applied in varying ways, with equally varying meaning.

Case in point: content marketing. I’m sure there are some rolling eyeballs out there even at the mention of it. The phrase is wearing thin, but the impact of content marketed right can truly move the sales/reputation needle for brands. It has grown in popularity because companies have a growing need to populate empty pages on blogs, websites, social platforms, and audio channels. So let’s define what content marketing is (from my experience at my agency): an on-going thematic narrative that helps define a company’s reputation and convey its story in concert with other forms of marketing. It includes blogs, newsletters, media coverage, podcasts, social media, SEO, white papers and video. It lives or dies by the company’s ability to publish and distribute this content swiftly and consistently.

See-Now Buy-Now Comes to Fashion Marketing

What does see-now buy-now mean for fashion marketing?

When Lotta Volkova, fashion stylist of Vetements fame, was asked who in the fashion industry is in power today, she simply replied: the consumer. Not the CEO, the editor, the journalist or the fashion critic. The consumer.

Ms. Volkova is right. Out of more than 152 designers presenting collections at this September’s fashion week, 10% are doing it in the see-now buy-now manner.
