'Journalism Without the Makeup': Vice Hypes Launch of 'Vice News Tonight'
Posted in: Uncategorized“WE NOW INTERRUPT YOUR REGULARLY SCHEDULED WORLDVIEW,” reads the typographic message that opens a new promo for “Vice News Tonight,” Vice Media’s joint attempt with HBO to get millennials to watch a daily TV news show (beginning Sept. 26). As the promo continues, an announcer promises “the next generation of news” as more typography — “NO ANCHORS,” “NO SPONSORS,” “NO CENSORS” — flashes across some rather random scenes (explosions, gunfire, a gay pride parade). “Journalism without the makeup, truth without the talking heads,” the announcer continues. “This is not the nightly news. This is Vice News Tonight.”
The absence of anchors and makeup (we’ll see about that) is meant to convey authenticity, while the lack of censors and sponsors positions ‘Vice News Tonight’ as a more unfiltered, truthful form of broadcast journalism. Of course, Vice famously takes money from big brands and filthy advertisers elsewhere in its empire (including Phillip Morris, through Vice’s Edition Worldwide), and Vice Media is partially owned by the mainstreamest of mainstream media conglomerates, including Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox and A&E Networks (the Hearst Corp./Walt Disney Co. joint venture).
But this — this new news show over on HBO? This is PURE!
Search Giant Baidu Gives a Peek at its Latest Work on Artificial Intelligence
Posted in: UncategorizedBaidu, the world’s No. 3 force in online advertising after Google and Facebook, sees artificial intelligence as the next big thing. And it’s using AI to power advertising, voice recognition technology and self-driving cars.
During its annual conference Thursday in Beijing, the search giant announced news on the autonomous vehicle front, saying it had won clearance from the California Department of Motor Vehicles to test its cars there. It also signed a partnership with U.S. chip-maker Nvidia to work on self-driving cars together.
Despite all the investment on futuristic projects, Baidu got nearly 93% of its revenue in the last quarter from online marketing. It has been trying to branch out, with services like takeout delivery and movie ticket booking, and with splashy deep-learning work similar to the Google Brain project.
Amazon Using Twitch Audience as Focus Group for New TV Shows
Posted in: UncategorizedAmazon.com has discovered a new use for Twitch Interactive, which it purchased two years ago for about $1 billion. Seeking feedback from Twitch’s highly engaged audience of 10 million daily users, Amazon streamed two original TV-show pilots produced by its own studios on the gaming website.
The first-time move highlights how Twitch can potentially be used to advantage against video-streaming rival Netflix, giving Amazon a vast audience on which to test new shows before committing to producing entire seasons. Both Amazon and Netflix produce original programs to attract customers with exclusive content.
Twitch is known as the ESPN of video games because it streams competitions featuring professional gamers duking it out on popular titles such as League of Legends. The site lets viewers chat alongside the action, reacting with emojis and posing questions to their favorite streamers.
Why Are CMOs Dropping Like Flies?
Posted in: UncategorizedA study published last month by Russell Reynolds Associates shows that CMO turnover is higher than ever. In some industries, the trend is eye-popping — particularly in retail, where 48% of the top 30 retailers in the U.S. have had a change in marketing leadership in the last 12 months. Consumer tech, media, CPG and hospitality industries also had high levels of churn in the CMO hot seat.
What’s more, 62% of companies replace their CMOs with someone from outside the company, a clear indicator that many CEOs don’t believe anyone else who works at their companies has the answers either.
What the hell is going on?
Koch Brothers, Others Spend Nearly $5 Million to Attack Evan Bayh
Posted in: UncategorizedThe Indiana Senate seat was considered a safe one for the GOP just a few short weeks ago. That’s until Evan Bayh, a former U.S. senator and governor, announced his candidacy. The well-known Indiana Democrat threw Republicans for a loop when he decided to leap back into politics and enter the hoosier state race in July.
Now a handful of super PACs and outside groups are funneling money into the state to fight Mr. Bayh and support lesser-known Republican Rep. Todd Young.
In just two months, nearly $4.6 million worth of Koch Brothers money and cash from other conservative groups has been plowed into Indiana in the hopes of defeating Mr. Bayh. In August, the National Republican Senatorial Committee dropped more than $640,000 on digital and other media buys attacking the senator turned financial industry board member, according to Ad Age’s analysis of recent Federal Election Commission reports.

Posted in: UncategorizedColombia "Land of flowers" (2016) 2:00 (Colombia)
Posted in: UncategorizedIf this is indeed the case, there will be a lot of able bodied men and women in need of a job and a steady paycheck. That’s where this film comes in. Despite the atrocities, Colombia is a beautiful place, literally brimming over with flowers. And with more than 500 varieties, they are the largest exporter of flowers to the U.S. alone.
In short this spot reminds the world, as well as Colombians, that there is now a real chance to have the country stand for something else– beauty– and maybe hopefully influence the rest of the world, too. Because the world needs more flowers and fewer guns.
Nice poetic idea. By the way, they used more than 25,000 flowers to make this epic spot.

Pure, indeed.
Com Hem "The Crystal Clear Experience" (2016) 1:00 (Sweden)
Posted in: UncategorizedThanks to Dabitch for the translation. This spot is great from the casting to the soundtrack by M83. Speaking of crystal clear, this spot was shot off the coast of Malta which still has some of the cleanest waters in the Mediterranean around. Man, I wish I could lay around and watch HD today instead of working.
The Mourning Posters honor species that are near extinction.

DDB NY created movie poster illustrations for a campaign called “The mourning posters.” These premiered at the Wildlife Conservation Film Festival as well as Nat Geo WILD’s world premiere screening of Mission Critical in Washington Square Park last week. The Mourning Posters is a tribute to the species that are close to extinction in each film. Black and white of course conveys the stark reality of the situation.
Hornbach – Your project only belongs to you (2016) :60 (Germany)
Posted in: UncategorizedThis ad does not disappoint. This ad tells the potential Hornbach customer that their project is theirs alone, and they can do what they want, how they want to it. British director Ian Pons Jewell has produced a visually stunning narrative showing its protagonist hurtling through an extremely wide range of emotional states in the course of his DIY endeavours. He goes go from confident arrogance, to frenzy, failure and triumph, to seemingly sado-masochistic tendencies. He’s combing his hair with saws because he is now king of the tools. There’s sweat and dirt and our protagonist slamming through walls – to hell with convention. There’s underpants flying out the window because it’s hot, and laying a parquet floor takes ages and hey nobody else is around so why not? The visual language in this ad is part Delicatessen, part religious epiphany, part tool porn. The bastion of liberty is your own home, you are the king of your castle and within your own house – or project – you can do whatever you want! Hornbach may not even realize how much their ads make me want to buy a house.
“We’ve spent the past few months taking a long, hard look at the ever- increasing constraints on people’s personal freedom,” says Creative Director Guido Heffels. “We’ve looked at social regulations and laws, and also at the last bastion of liberty – one’s own four walls. A topic absolutely relevant to today.”
Well, there’s some rules you don’t want to be breaking, wet rooms need to be fully waterproof before tiling for example, but you have the freedom to pick any tile you want and knock down that annoying non-bearing wall to make room for a tub. Your house, your rules! Of course there will be a Tumblr blog attached to this campaign, #projektrituale, where all of the social media content from it will be collected. This campaign will be rolled out progressively across Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, and Luxembourg. I predict many houses in need of TLC will be purchased soon after.
