Autotrader "Kick" (2016) :30 (USA)

Forget the pejorative “throw like a girl.” This spot celebrates women and all their badassness in athleticism. I love this spot which features a girl who keeps shifting her power. Starting with the ballet classes and kicking the back of the front seats because karate to football (soccer) and then football-football. Autotrader is the brand that enables you to find not just a car, but a car that’s truly right for you. Or your daughter’s needs. Because she kicks ass. Great storytelling here. And they do a good job of selling the service because it really isn’t about the car brand. And I have to say. kudos to Zambezi for makign the dad look like someone who cares. Way to ignore the dumb dad stereotype!

Scotiabank "Hockey Dreams" (2016) 1:00 (Canada)

Very moving tribute to the great hockey players and the kids who have been inspired by them for Scotia Bank’s sponsorship of the World Cup of Hockey. Love the match cutting between kids and professionals in photographs. For those who love hockey you’ll realize this spot recreates iconic moments.

The first being Bobby Orr’s famous flying goal, i.e the overtime goal catapulted the Boston Bruins to a series sweep and a Stanley Cup victory in 1970. The second moment features Canadian icon Lanny McDonald scoring a goal to help give Calgary its only Stanly Cup.

The third goal by Mario Lemieux, is considered one of the most spectacular playoff goals in Stanley Cup history. But hey, I come from Pittsburgh and Mario’s one of us, so you can’t claim him, Canada, sorry, eh.

The fourth goal however, really is the most iconic hockey goal in Canadian history. . It was scored by Paul Henderson for Team Canada against the Soviet Union in the Summit Series in 1972. You can’t beat western goals against commies, can you.

Canada has a special relationship to hockey, and I know as the temperatures inevitably drop with the season’s change that there will hardly be a dry eye when this spot airs. Nice one, Scotia Bank.

But you’re kidding yourself with Super Mario. I grew up down the street from him. His blood isn’t filled with maple leaf. It’s yinzer through and through.

Heal Every Life Possible "We're not gonna take it" (2016) 4:25 (USA)

You may think of Dee Snider and Twisted Sister as being nothing more than an 80’s hair metal band, but when you hear the reworking of this song it will change your mind. This video, a reworking of Twisted Sister’s iconic hit “We’re not gonna take it,” was done in conjunction with Mindfreak Criss Angel’s charity to help kids with cancer. Both of these performers are from Long Island so they share a special bond. But more importantly they have both donated their energy to a bigger cause. HELP stands for Heal Every Life Possible, and that’s what this project is for.

On Monday September 12th at the Luxor hotel in Las Vegas there will be a special event to benefit pediatric cancer research and treatment. Can’t make it? Well go to their website and donate. Is it cheesy? Kinda. They’re in the dessert outside of Las Vegas, after all. But will it help save the lives of children afflicted with a horrible disease? Let’s hope so.

Put it this way, they’re probably doing more than your sorry ass is. So shut up and give a couple of bucks to the cause. And if you can be in Vegas in time for the benefit everyone from Cirque du Soleil to Wayne Newton will be a part of it, so it’s worth putting down the poker chips to check it out.

The mission of the Johnny Crisstopher Children’s Charitable Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, is to raise awareness of pediatric cancer and provide funds for research, treatment, and – ultimately – a cure. Unlike many other non-profit charities, 100% of your donation will go directly to this fight; NOT one cent will be deducted for ANY expenses, salaries, or overhead. Criss Angel has funded the operations of the foundation out of his own pocket since its inception in 2008. It has now become his life’s mission (after working with childhood causes since 2001) when recently his own child, Johnny Crisstopher was diagnosed with leukemia in 2015 at 20 months old.

Kenzo world "the new fragrance" (2016) 3:48 (USA)

In this Spike Jonze ad for Kenzo, Margaret Qualley breaks away from pretending to laugh at banquet jokes and her so-called role in society to dance by herself through a building, all to an original soundtrack created by Spike’s brother, Sam Spiegel.
People are describing this spot in such glowing terms as being the complete antithesis of the usual perfume ad that usually feature a demure woman acting all dramatic and caressing a bottle. That may be true for perfume ads. But it’s also the same exact concept as Jonze’s Weapon of Choice Weapon of Choice music video, in which Christopher Walken, also beaten down and out of place from the societal demands of being a businessman, frees himself by dancing when no one is watching. So score one for female empowerment, but minus two thousand points for repeating yourself.
