Scotiabank "Hockey Dreams" (2016) 1:00 (Canada)

Very moving tribute to the great hockey players and the kids who have been inspired by them for Scotia Bank’s sponsorship of the World Cup of Hockey. Love the match cutting between kids and professionals in photographs. For those who love hockey you’ll realize this spot recreates iconic moments.

The first being Bobby Orr’s famous flying goal, i.e the overtime goal catapulted the Boston Bruins to a series sweep and a Stanley Cup victory in 1970. The second moment features Canadian icon Lanny McDonald scoring a goal to help give Calgary its only Stanly Cup.

The third goal by Mario Lemieux, is considered one of the most spectacular playoff goals in Stanley Cup history. But hey, I come from Pittsburgh and Mario’s one of us, so you can’t claim him, Canada, sorry, eh.

The fourth goal however, really is the most iconic hockey goal in Canadian history. . It was scored by Paul Henderson for Team Canada against the Soviet Union in the Summit Series in 1972. You can’t beat western goals against commies, can you.

Canada has a special relationship to hockey, and I know as the temperatures inevitably drop with the season’s change that there will hardly be a dry eye when this spot airs. Nice one, Scotia Bank.

But you’re kidding yourself with Super Mario. I grew up down the street from him. His blood isn’t filled with maple leaf. It’s yinzer through and through.
