The Relaunch of the Agency Model

Category: Beyond Madison Avenue
Summary: There is no doubt that agencies are facing a hostile environment. Agencies not only need to prove why they are needed, but they also need to perform on a higher-than-expected model in order to prove their value.

Not an easy position to be in.

The question is, then, what can the agency do to provide the value needed to convince brands that they are viable and necessary partners?

Subway Faces PR Crisis in Light of Jared Fogle Investigation

Subway’s got a PR crisis on its hands as news reports circulate that the home of the chain’s longtime spokesman, Jared Fogle, is being investigated.

According to multiple news reports, the Subway pitchman’s house was raided by federal agents in an investgiation that authorities declined to discuss publicly.

But the search of Mr. Fogle’s Indiana home comes two months after Russell Taylor, executive director of the Fogle Foundation, a group that is dedicated to helping teach kids healthy lifestyle habits, was arrested on child pornography charges. Following that, Subway and Mr. Fogle said they had severed all ties with Mr. Taylor.

Family Time Becomes Weezer Singalong in Honda Spot

Every weekday, we bring you the Ad Age/iSpot Hot Spots, new and trending TV commercials tracked by iSpot.tv, a company that catalogs, tags and measures activity around TV ads in real time. The New Releases here ran on TV for the first time yesterday. The Most Engaging ads are showing sustained social heat, ranked by SpotShare scores reflecting the percent of digital activity associated with each one over the past week. See the methodology here.

Among the new releases, McDonald’s plies you with colorful fruit and tumbling ice to advertise its frozen lemonade, a “real lemonade made with no artificial flavors” (but probably plenty of sugar). And a volunteer named Deborah Heritage, who appears to be something like the Jane Goodall of birds, says she uses Dawn soap on oily birds and at home.

For a family of Weezerheads in a Honda Pilot spot, 1994 never really ended. The group breaks into a rendition of “Buddy Holly.”

Anxious Greeks Buy Macs and PlayStations While They Still Can

As the going gets tough in Greece, the Greeks are going shopping.

The government was forced to extend capital controls and keep banks closed until at least Thursday as money runs out with no new bailout imminent. While some people are using their remaining available euros to buy staples to cover daily needs, others are hitting electronics and appliance stores for Apple computers and Sony PlayStations to max out their credit and debit cards where vendors still accept them.

“People are spending the money they have in the bank because otherwise they’re afraid they won’t get it out,” said Natasa, 33, a shop assistant at electronics retailer Plaisio Computer in central Athens. She asked not to be identified by her full name. “A Mac is something that keeps its value,” she added, pointing to a gleaming 27-inch screen.

Progressive Political Giant MoveOn Wants Your Twitter Account

Progressive political organization MoveOn has become known for its massive database of supporters who back the group’s stances on issues such as gay marriage and wealth inequality. Historically, it has communicated with its more than 8 million active members primarily via email, often asking for monetary donations. Now the group, which was influential in its endorsement of Barack Obama over Hillary Clinton during his first Democratic presidential primary run, is testing a way for people to give by “donating” their social-media accounts.

So far, only 235 members have agreed to allow MoveOn to commandeer their Twitter accounts to post messages using the “Donate Your Account” tool MoveOn has asked active supporters to sign up for.

MoveOn’s members already serve as virtual megaphones trumpeting the organization’s messages to their friends and followers.

Viewability Trend Takes Spotlight in GQ.com's Latest Revamp

GQ.com is getting a new look this year, and that includes making sure the site’s ads are ones people will look at.

Ahead of a larger redesign that will debut in the fall, GQ is rolling out some tweaks to its site, including a revamped home page, new slideshow format, a new grooming section and in-stream ads designed to own people’s attentions. Mr Porter, Mont Blanc, Tiffany & Co. and LG are among the first brands to use GQ’s new ad formats.

These tweaks are among the more apparent examples of a bigger overhaul GQ has made to its back-end publishing technology. “This migration is the biggest thing to happen at GQ since Conde Nast bought the brand,” said the magazine’s publisher Howard Mittman.

Whimsical Black Tattoos

Facebook Brings Its Data To Agencies With Road Show

Facebook is trying to get smarter with its ad agency relations by aggressively plugging a consumer research program called “Facebook IQ.”

The initiative seeks to give brands and agencies a window on consumer behavior by merging Facebook data with third-party research. While the program is several months old, Facebook execs have started giving it more attention by taking the insights on the road. The tour, called “Facebook IQ Live,” has included recent stops in New York City and Chicago. Los Angeles could be next, followed by stops in international markets, according to Facebook executives.

The idea is to personally introduce mid-level agency staffers to the data, which includes insights on matters like when new mothers are on Facebook the most or how varied demographic groups shop differently online.
