Small Agency Conference: Tips for Agencies Thinking of Selling


There are unusually high levels of mergers and acquisitions in the agency world right now, but that doesn’t mean small shops can just breeze into the right kind of sale, panelists said at the Ad Age Small Agency Conference on Thursday in Boston.

Potential buyers aren’t the problem. “New buyers coupled with new capabilities and demand is driving a lot of new activity in the market and I really don’t see it stopping any time soon,” said Maurice Watkins, partner at Results International, an investment bank focused on agencies and marketing tech companies. The big agency holding companies are only doing about 15% of the global deals right now, he said, with IT companies, international buyers, media companies and private equity driving many of the other deals.

The questions are which agencies are wanted, ready to sell and prepared to navigate the process. Size does matter, even within the “small agency” crowd, Mr. Watkins said. “It’s very difficult to in any market to find a buyer for the 10-person agency,” he said. Fifty people, however, draws a certain kind of buyer. If you get to 100 people, that’s a different kind.

WPP, Providence Bid $550m for U.K.'s Chime Communications


WPP and Providence Equity Partners, a New York-based global private equity firm, have launched a $550 million takeover bid for London-based Chime Communications, owner of VCCP, the U.K.’s sixth biggest agency according to Nielsen figures.

Chime has confirmed that it will recommend shareholders accept the bid, sending the company’s share price up by more than 25% since the announcement this morning. WPP already has a 20% stake in Chime, and the Financial Times reported that WPP plans to keep its stake at about 20%. That would make Providence the majority investor.

VCCP clients include telecoms giant O2, Coors, ING Direct, EasyJet, Vans, Wal Mart-owned Asda, and comparethemarket.com, for which the agency created the iconic and long-running “Meerkat” campaign.

AT&T Combines Ad Sales Teams Amid DirecTV Merger


The merger of AT&T and DirecTV is adding much needed reach to targeted TV advertising.

DirecTV’s sales team is joining AT&T AdWorks group, forming AddressablePlus, which “gives advertisers the ability to reach their target audiences, at scale, delivering a better ROI than traditional approaches to national TV buying,” according to a statement.

The new entity will be led by Rick Welday who assumes the role as president of AT&T AdWorks. Mr. Welday most recently served as chief marketing officer of AT&T’s consumer segment.

Adidas is following up its star-studded spot for its Originals line, which challenges what it means to be a superstar, with a short film that presents the next wave of creators to the world.

Viewability Data Drives Upfront Deal Between Crackle and GroupM


Crackle is experiencing a boost in upfront dollars by promising to provide viewability data to advertisers.

GroupM is “substantially” growing its current business with Sony’s online video service, and in turn, its clients will receive real-time, multiscreen viewability metrics from Crackle.

The agency declined to reveal how big of an increase in ad dollars GroupM is committing year-over-year or the size of the investment.
