The Best of 2015's Bad Local Ads (So Far)

Local commercials — those gems of advertising offering sincere pledges of service and strange visuals seemingly inspired by bath salts — didn’t disappoint this year. These ads find a special place in culture and memory with catchy songs, dated graphics and grainy film. So without further ado, revel in the cheesy glory of summer 2015’s bad local ads. If you’re lucky, you might run into one of these local celebrities at the grocery store (or the dog park).

Millennials, Now Bigger than Boomers, Offer Hotels Challenge

As the summer travel season hits its peak, the $928 billion global travel industry is reaching out to a new key segment: millennials.

Hospitality chains are doing everything from changing up decor — updating rooms with trendier furnishings and glitzing up lobbies with musical acts — to adding services such as budget prices, 24-hour cafes, full-service bars and even yoga classes in pursuit of the millennial traveler. And in a nod to this digitally conscious generation, they are wooing them with social media, concierge apps, free Wi-Fi and smartphones used as room keys.

“This is a huge generation that will have a big impact, and we’ll continue to meet them wherever they are,” said Mary Beth Parks, senior VP-global marketing at Hilton Worldwide, which has more than 4,300 hotels in 93 countries.

Brands: Don't Take the Easy Way Out by Launching a Media Review

“Reviewmaggedon.”

The recent spate of media agency reviews has sparked a dramatic new term to describe it — and no shortage of speculation from industry experts on what’s driving the searches.

On the list of theories are transparency woes, marketer cost-cutting, viewability concerns, and the move to programmatic buying. Sir Martin Sorrell is the one who got it right. While in Cannes last month, the leader of the world’s largest ad holding company, WPP, offered his opinion that above all, marketers are confused. While I haven’t agreed with him on much in the past, his observation in this case feels spot-on. The media landscape is so dizzyingly fragmented that any marketer would feel less certain about their go-forward strategy.

Google Suspends 'Zombie' Apps Following Forensiq Report

Numerous apps have been suspended from Google’s Play store following a report about malicious mobile apps that were defrauding advertisers out of nearly a billion dollars a year.

The information was released by ad-fraud firm Forensiq, which detailed how unscrupulous developers had created so-called zombie apps that were available on the Google Play store.

The apps — which run constantly in the background on smart phones — can consume gigabytes of data, severely drain battery life and run more than 16,000 advertisements in a single day without the user’s knowledge.

See the Spot: Is Walmart Really Saying It Pays Workers $15 an Hour?

Is Walmart falsely implying that its workers make a living wage — specifically the $15-an-hour minimum sought by some advocacy groups? The giant retailer may soon be answering that question for the Federal Trade Commission, after an unusual move by the National Advertising Division of the Council of Better Business Bureaus.

The NAD announced last week that it had referred the Walmart ad to the FTC after Walmart refused to participate in an NAD review, saying the ad that first aired in May on TV and online didn’t make those implications and the NAD isn’t qualified to review the matter.

One of the advocacy groups that typically criticizes Walmart’s employment practices Making Change at Walmart today joined the NAD in calling on the FTC to review the ad. The FTC didn’t immediately return calls on whether it’s inquiring, and generally doesn’t comment on cases in progress. But NAD Director Andrea Levine said the commission usually does take up matters referred by the group.

Well, That Bites: 'Sharknado 3' Ratings Drop 31%

For all the noise “Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!” generated on Twitter Wednesday night, the latest installment of Syfy’s campy disaster-movie franchise failed to make much of a splash in the ratings.

According to Nielsen live-plus-same-day data, “Sharknado 3” scared up 2.81 million viewers and a 0.9 in the adults 18-49 demo, marking a 31% drop versus last summer’s 1.3 rating.

While “Sharknado 3” was by far the night’s most-watched program on cable, its demo performance only put it into a tie for first place with A&E’s “Duck Dynasty.” Overall deliveries of the third installment in the aquatic-predators-and-inclement-weather fable were down 28% from the year-ago 3.9 million viewers.

UK Production office Knucklehead, now has an LA office.

Award-winning UK-based production company Knucklehead officially opens the doors to its first US office this month. The LA-based office will be headed up by industry mainstay Cathleen Kisich, who comes on board as Knucklehead’s first US Executive Producer.

Established in 2005 by EP/Managing Partners Tim Katz and Matthew Brown, Knucklehead has quickly built a sterling reputation with its high standard of creative execution and faultless production.

Katz and Brown have tapped Cathleen Kisich to lead the charge on importing the Knucklehead seal of quality with the US flagship. Kisich began her seasoned career as an agency producer before making the jump to Executive Producer in 2010 when she joined the table at Caviar, representing some of the biggest names in the industry including AG Rojas and Keith Schofield.

Kisich also brings along Producer Lauren Small to the new Knucklehead US. Small previously worked at Partizan, and at Caviar, where she and Kisich met.

Veteran Unscripted Shows Keeping the Lights on for TV Nets

Midway through the summer TV season, familiarity is clearly trumping novelty, as hoary old formats like NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” and CBS’ “Big Brother” are crushing nearly all of broadcast’s new unscripted fare.

According to Nielsen live-plus-same-day data, the 10-year-old “America’s Got Talent” is the summer’s top-performing show in the all-important adults 18-49 demo, averaging a 2.4 rating. In a season of plummeting viewership stats, “America’s Got Talent” has managed to eke out a slight increase where it counts most, improving 4% versus its year-ago 2.3 rating.

“AGT” is also the most-watched summer program, boasting an average delivery of 10.7 million total viewers.
