Will Next Year See the SXSW-ification of Cannes?

The next big thing for the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity may be attracting the startup and venture capital community as enthusiastic participants.

Unilever brought to Cannes its Foundry50, the world’s top 50 marketing-tech startups, and the festival partnered with R/GA to run a Start-Up Academy giving 10 startups guidance and a chance to present to brands and agencies. And the two-year-old Innovation Lions category includes tech entrepreneurs as judges.

“Startups have not been to Cannes before in any numbers,” said Philip Thomas, CEO of Lions Festivals. “The early adopters are here and I think they’ll go back and spread the word.”

Defying Tough Times, These Four Foreign Brands Are Successful in China

China can be a rough market for foreign brands these days, and this month brought a few jarring reminders of that.

Hershey had been on a roll in China, logging strong sales, opening an innovation center in Shanghai and buying a local chocolate maker, but its revenue in China dropped by nearly half in the first quarter of 2015 and was disappointing in April and May. With those troubles in mind, the company just cut its general 2015 growth target and announced layoffs for 300 employees.

In a completely different sector, luxury, Prada recently reported that net profit in the most recent quarter tumbled 44%, with blame focused on lower spending in greater China and Asia.

Best Practices: How To Handle Difficult Clients

Agency-client relationships are a lot like marriages. A blend of trust, communication and legal documents add up to some good times and some bumpy ones, and not always until death do they part. But just like a marriage, if the relationship does fail, it’s rarely just one side’s fault.

While clients are more likely to do the walking, agencies sometimes “fire” clients as well. Most people likely remember Cramer-Krasselt’s resigning of Panera Bread and the internal memo leak last year, although Panera said later it called a review and C-K declined to participate.

C-K declined an invitation to offer best practices for this story. Still, handling a difficult client can be — well, difficult. A few other agencies offered their advice.

Toyota Gets Local, Uses Geo-Targeted Snapchat Ads

Toyota is driving “Let’s Go Places” to some new digital venues that are decidedly local.

In the latest evolution of the nearly three-year-old campaign, the automaker has purchased ads on Snapchat that target Los Angeles. Videos will run inside Snapchat’s localized Live Story feature, marking what Toyota says is the first time an automotive brand has utilized that local ad format. Toyota has also partnered with Google to automatically customize banner ads in 15,000 U.S. cities using an API that incorporates city-specific information into the ads.

The two geo-targeted digital executions are part of a larger national ad push Toyota is making this summer for its two top-selling cars, Camry and Corolla, that seeks to give further definition to the “Let’s Go Places” tagline, which launched in late 2012.

Deck of Playing Cards Featuring Glitches

A Redesign of Kelloggs Special K Package

Our Little Studio : Disha Gupta Sangal

desicreative – Indian Advertising Creative Blog and Community (beta 1.4)

Disha Gupta Sangal, a Graphic Design Consultant and founder of ‘Our Little Studio’ graduated from Wigan & Leigh College with a degree in Graphic Design. With an experience of 5 years in the industry, Disha has developed a good understanding of clients and their design briefs. For her graphic design is about the perfect fusion of passion and knowledge. She specialises in Identity, print, illustrations and icons. She has recently started her own venture ‘Our Little Studio’. One can see and appreciate  portfolio here and she blogs here.

A little about your outfit “Our Little Studio.”
Our Little Studio is only 4 months old, a graphic design start-up, based in New Delhi. We believe in creating the wow factor with every design to ensure that our client’s products stand out amongst all the competition. Logo Design, Branding, Illustrations, Icons and Print design is our key areas.
Is Our Little Studio primarily an illustration and design company? Do you also work on brand building and corporate identities?
I am looking forward to work on brand building and identities .

Tell us about your designers/animators. Did they go into fine art or design schools? How do you pick them up?
Currently I am working alone, I prefer working on project basis to avoid an unwanted pressure of deadlines. I like to put my efforts in one or two project at a time, this helps to give quality work and my clients don’t need to worry about the deadlines.

How would you define the design style at Our Little Studio.
For me simplicity works. I feel a design must have a function, a purpose and not just a beautiful artwork. As a designer I feel it is equally important to be flexible and not just stick with a specific style. I try to do something different for each project, but one can find simplicity and vibrancy in my work. Each day I am learning new things and evolving myself as a designer.

What does Our Little Studio do which sets it apart?
The journey is really long, can’t answer this question so quickly. Our Little Studio is an infant arrived in this world, and I need to learn a lot right now to set Our Little Studio apart from others.

Were there any particular role models for you when you grew up?
Not really!

Who was the most influential personality on your career in Brand Building?
Not just one personality, there are many excellent designers, illustrators, leaders and my family who has an influence on my career. And my husband is currently helping me a lot to become better a designer and an entrepreneur.

What made you start Our Little Studio?
With an experience of five and a half years in the industry, I have developed a good understanding of my clients. As a Senior Designer my responsibility was limited to understand the design brief, communicate with the clients and finding solutions for their design problems. But this wasn’t suffice for me, I felt my learning process had come to a halt. Thus I decided to start my own and face the world from scratch and left my well-paid job.

How important is the focus on good design in Our Little Studio?
My focus is not just on good design but to add a wow factor in the brands.

Are you working with any advertising agencies? Any brands?
Currently I have worked with a start-up, Cook Gourmet and Luxury Connect Business School, Gurgaon.

What do you feel about the state of design in India? Do you feel that our collective aesthetics need to improve?
This is the best time to become a designer in India. More startups are emerging and more young people are looking for new, experimental work for their brands. We are improving day by day, we are adapting to new styles, vibrant colors and more experimental approach to our designs.

Any other Indian graphic designers who you admire?
Ankur Gupta (4:DESIGN Studio) for sleek and classy work, Kunel Gaur (Animal) for the uniqueness in each project, Kriti Monga (Turmeric Design) I love her style, Neha Tulsian (NH1) beautiful concept based works.

What advice do you have for aspiring creative professionals? Would you advise them to take on graphic design as a career option?
Graphic Design is a great career option,

Who would your design team like to take out for dinner?
I would like to take Mr. Narendra Modi out for dinner along with my business partner and husband.

What’s on the company iPod?
I don’t have an iPod

Mac or PC?
Mac
