Pearl Sailing Ship Sculpture

Patron Breaks Through the Tequila Clutter with ESPN Buy

In conjunction with the launch of a new marketing campaign, Patron Spirits has begun rolling out a series of clutter-busting custom integration units in the late-night edition of ESPN’s “SportsCenter.”

The premium tequila brand is placing 15-second transitional spots at the top of ESPN’s flagship show, targeting broadcasts airing immediately after the NBA Finals and NHL Stanley Cup Final. Designed to showcase Patron’s new tagline (“It Doesn’t Have to Make Sense to Be Perfect”), the spots offer wry commentary on that night’s big game.

For example, shortly after NBCSN’s coverage of Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final, Patron led off the midnight “SportsCenter” with a nod to Chicago’s 2-1 win over Tampa Bay. The copy that accompanied the synth-scored glamour shot read, “Tonight’s forecast in the Windy City? 0% chance of Lightning.”

We Hear: Mediahub Wins Royal Caribbean Pitch

According to our sources, Mediahub, the media buying wing of newly-formed Mullen Lowe Group, has won the Royal Caribbean review.

Back in February, we discovered that the cruise line–like so many clients undergoing leadership changes–wanted to shake up its agency roster and refresh its brand with a creative review that marked a break with global AOR JWT.

Over the next three months, we learned that Mullen would compete against Deutsch NY, Droga5 and 22squared for the business. 22 and Mullen were the final contestants, and the latter won the account only a week after its merger with Lowe.

The media review followed, beginning approximately one month ago. Sources told Adweek that the three competitors would be incumbent Mindshare (WPP), Media Storm and IPG’s Mediahub. They estimated that the decision would come down in early June.

The act of assigning both its media and creative accounts to Mullen Lowe Group makes perfect sense for Royal Caribbean, which follows other large clients in simplifying its marketing operations by “bundling” agency relationships under one (rhetorical) roof.

The client has not yet responded to multiple queries regarding its media business; spokespeople also declined to comment on the initial review until our story went live.

Royal Caribbean spends approximately $80 million on media each year.

McCann Issues ‘Golf Love Tests’ for Zurich

McCann Worldgroup launched a campaign for insurance company Zurich in anticipation of the upcoming U.S. Open on June 15th, entitled “Golf Love Tests.”

A 40-second spot sees golfers Rickie Fowler, Justin Rose, Lexi Thompson, Ben Crane, Jamie Donaldson, Billy Horschel and Keegan Bradley facing a polygraph test to determine if they really love golf. The test administrator asks such tongue-in-cheek questions as whether they’ve insured their swing, whether they’ve insured their caddy and “Do you keep your caddy in a safe?” Golf fans should get a kick out of seeing the stars in a less serious light, and there are longer videos of each individual golfer for those who wish to see the idea carried further. In addition to the online spots, written by Gabriel Miller and art directed by Ronaldo Tavares, the campaign also includes broadcast and print components.

Paperlike Ceramics of Sprouting Blades of Grass
