EU Plans to 'Conclude Shortly' Probes Into Apple, Amazon Tax

The European Union said it’s still seeking to make rapid progress in its tax investigations into four companies, including Apple and Amazon.com even after saying it will miss a self-imposed mid-year deadline.

EU antitrust commissioner Margrethe Vestager said she “will be seeking to conclude shortly” the probes, according to her foreword to the EU’s annual report on competition enforcement published on Thursday.

Ms. Vestager said last month that regulators will fail to complete tax probes into Apple, Amazon and also Starbucks Corp. and Fiat Finance & Trade by the middle of this year. The former Danish economy minister inherited the cases when she took over the EU role at the start of November. All the companies have said that they acted within the law.

The company also will make the watch available in Italy, Mexico, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland and Taiwan on June 26, the company said in a statement Thursday.

The gadget, which went on sale online in April, so far has only been available in stores for demonstration purposes. Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri has said that Apple was aiming to balance supply and demand by the end of June.

Zambezi Goes ‘Transparent’ for The Honest Company

Venice, California-based agency Zambezi created a broadcast spot entitled “Transparent “to help The Honest Company launch its “Lifestyle” lineup of “non-toxic, eco-friendly, effective” cleaning products.

Unsurprisingly, the 30-second spot highlights the brand’s transparency, as the brand prides itself with being clear and open with customers and its cleaning liquid and the bottle it comes in are both clear. To illustrate transparency, while shooting for the cuteness factor, Zambezi created a spot around a little girl with X-Ray glasses. She uses them to find her father’s wallet as her mother is doing laundry, which she then trades for a cookie. As the father is wiping down the counter with, the girl slips the glasses on and off while looking at the kitchen cleaning liquid bottle, without a noticeable difference (since The Honest Company’s products are so transparent). While the ad may come across as a bit hokey and obvious at times, it’s refreshing how it nonchalantly features a mixed race family and both the cutesiness and the brand message should appeal to parents with young children. Unfortunately, the ad concludes with a tired attempt at humor, as the father slips on the X-Ray glasses to look at the mom. Waka waka.

Mother London Promotes Hermeti and Ana Balarin to ECDs

Mother London announced the promotions of husband and wife creative team Hermeti Balarin and Ana Balarin to roles as executive creative directors effective today, the first time Mother has made such appointments for its London office, Campaign reports.

The duo will join Mother London’s existing management team, including managing director Sara Tate and joint heads of strategy Chris Gallery and Katie Mackay, reporting to the agency’s partners. Creative partners Robert Saville and Mark Waites previously ran the department, along with former creative partner Stephen Butler, who left the agency to join TBWAChiatDay as chief creative officer last year. The Balarins originally joined Mother London on placement back in January 0f 2007, moving from Brazil in the process.

“This is a big deal for Mother London. Handing creative leadership to a new generation is not something Mark and I do lightly,” Saville told Campaign. “In Ana and Hermeti, that decision is a no-brainer; they have it all.”

Thomas Struth. Sites of scientific and material progress

Struth’s most recent photographs of scientific research suggests a one-sided belief of progress. The increasing degree of fascination for the tools we construct to investigate into scientific and material progress distracts us from the equal need for progress on social and political levels continue

Nivea Created a Doll That Gets Sunburned to Teach Kids About the Importance of Sunscreen

Short of letting a child experience the lingering pain of a sunburn, how can you really teach them the importance of wearing sunscreen?

Tell an overstimulated kid to wait 15 minutes for mounds of sunscreen to soak in before they can dive into the ocean and you’re basically asking for tears.

Nivea and FCB Brazil have come up with one solution for educating kids about the sun in a language they’re sure to understand: toys.

The Nivea Doll is made with UV-sensitive material and quickly turns lobster-red when exposed to harsh rays without sunscreen, just like your own skin eventually would if left unprotected.

If the child uses sunscreen on the doll, it will be protected from sunburn. If the doll’s already red, putting a dollop of Nivea on it will turn the skin back to its normal shade (not a perfect comparison to a real sunburn, which is far harder to undo, but it’s an effective illustration for kids).

“Protecting and caring is something we learn from an early age. This emotional bond is what this Nivea action offers,” Joanna Monteiro, creative vp at FCB Brazil, said in a statement. “Through the magic of technology, children can see the sun’s effect on the skin of the doll.”

Last year, Nivea’s “Protection Ad,” which helped moms keep track of their kids at the beach, won a Cannes Mobile Grand Prix.

A Skateboard Ride From Rocky Desert to Cityscapes
