Famous Figures Made with Nuts and Adhesive Tape

Anamorphic and Geometric Projections

Tesco Splits With Kroger on Dunnhumby to Form New Marketing Shop

Kroger Co. has acquired the balance of its 50-50 DunnhumbyUSA marketing partnership with Tesco, forming a new unit that will continue to handle data and promotion programs for the biggest supermarket retailer in the U.S. and its suppliers.

And if you thought that old name of Dunnhumby a mashup of names of the firm’s founders was unusual, try the unit’s new one — 84.51.

The new unit will employ more than 500 of DunnhumbyUSA’s 700-plus U.S. employees. The remainder of Dunnhumby’s U.S. business will drop the “USA” and continue to work in offices in Cincinnati, Boston, Chicago, New York and Sacramento. The company will work with old clients of the firm aside from Kroger, including Macy’s.

Yahoo Aims for Millennials With 18 New Shows, Says CEO Marissa Mayer

Yahoo is throwing the kitchen sink at NewFronts advertisers looking to spend more money on digital video but unsure if that money will buy them the same number of eyeballs they would have received on TV.

At its NewFront presentation in New York on Monday, Yahoo announced plans to premiere 18 new digital video programs that span TV-style shows and shorter evergreen series. The portal is also expanding its live programming with an expansion of its existing concert series, a new reality show from Simon Cowell and a new live news program anchored by Yahoo’s global news anchor Katie Couric.

A Yahoo spokeswoman declined to say when the new shows will premiere or whether all of them are expected to premiere this year.

Mike Bloomberg Appeals to Advertisers at His Company's NewFronts Pitch

Bloomberg Media’s first NewFronts presentation wrapped up on Monday afternoon with a brief speech from the company’s founder, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who covered a variety of topics in a handful of minutes.

“We’d be honored to have your business,” he told the many advertisers and ad buyers in the room.

He made a joke at the expense of adland. “It’s a little early for drinks,” he said in the minutes before the presentation adjourned for cocktails. Then he corrected himself: “Not in the ‘Mad Men’ community.” (People laughed.)

Royal Caribbean Confirms Its Pitch Finalists

A week ago, we posted a blind item on the ongoing Royal Caribbean review.

We told our (mostly angry) readers that the client had narrowed its list of contenders down to three…but our sources missed one.

The client did not speak to us regarding the details of the review and hesitated to discuss it even when the news first broke in February, but they did provide Andrew McMains with a list of the finalists today. They are:

  • Deutsch LA
  • Mullen
  • Droga5
  • 22squared

Our sources mentioned the first three but somehow left out 22. A legitimate oversight, we’re sure.

The client seemingly wants to downsize future campaigns: McMains describes the shops involved as “midsize players,” noting that the final pitches will happen this week in Miami. It would also appear that JWT Worldwide will not retain any of the RC business after holding the account for seven years, though we received mixed messages on that point when the review went public. (JWT London recently lost creative AOR duties to TBWA.)

Royal Caribbean also plans to review its media account (current AOR Mindshare), but of course our readers don’t care about that.

Women Carrying Birds and Flowers Paintings
