Dollar Shave Club Takes Crack at Hair Care With Boogie's Styling

Dollar Shave Club, as it continues slice away at established razor brands, is taking a swipe a vast new market hair care.

The e-commerce player reported more than tripling sales last year to $65 million and expects to more than double sales this year to $140 million, in part by launching Boogie’s styling aids for men. The line is backed by an online “Boogie’s Match” product-personalization tool and a “Hairantee” offering a full replacement at no cost if men choose the wrong product.

While less-expensive razors have been Dollar Shave Club’s key proposition, Boogie’s, like other category extensions for the brand, isn’t cheap. Products that include hair gel, clay, cream, fiber and paste go for $7 to $10 at or above prices of comparable mass-market products.

Origami como você nunca viu

16416624977_9af9dc9845_k

Copywriting: The Glass is Always Half Full

Category: Beyond Madison Avenue
Summary: Copywriting makes everything better. You can say “99% fat-free” instead of “Only 1% fat.” You can be “delighted” instead of just “happy.” “Low-budget” becomes “Indie.” “Used” becomes “pre-owned,” and so on. In copywriting, the glass is always half full.

But just like with any power, as a copywriter, you have to know when to pull back. Beware of overdoing it with your skills; you don’t want your headline to sound like someone slaved over it for hours. Just like with dancing, the audience — in your case, the reader — doesn’t want to see the effort. That’s what makes it so magical.

So if it’s not what you say but how you say it, how do you say it really, really well? 1. Whatever the project, address it as if it’s no big deal.

Why Small Firms Are Declaring War on Big Banks

Small financial firms are swapping their conservative tactics for bolder marketing that calls out mega banks for bailouts, high fees and being out of touch with Main Street. The edgier campaigns are meant to lure customers away from competitors like Chase and Bank of America, which are among the top spenders in the category, as well as turn around more than a decade of declining market share.

“We want to go after their disgruntled customers,” said Kevin Tynan, senior VP-marketing at LIberty Bank for Savings in Chicago, Ill. “We need to develop a message that is going to resonate.”

The firm adopted the brand approach in 2013 — when the economy was recovering and discontent for commercial banks was high — with the tagline, “Better banking because we’re not a bank,” and a spot called “Boardroom,” which criticized banks for charging high fees and accepting bailouts.

Facebook and Publishers Take Cautious Approach to Content Tie-Up

The march towards media companies publishing content directly to Facebook continues.

Barely a month after Facebook Chief Product Officer Chris Cox said publicly that the social network wants to host media companies’ articles and videos, The New York Times reported that BuzzFeed, National Geographic and the Times are the initial partners in a project that will see Facebook hosting some of their content. The project is expected to rollout in the coming months.

BuzzFeed and the Times are already among numerous media companies that publish videos directly to Facebook. But a partnership with the social network would likely go further, extending to ad revenue sharing.

P&G Recovers U.S. Diaper Lead, But Kimberly-Clark Gains in China

After a decades-long climb, Procter & Gamble Co. regained share leadership over rival Kimberly-Clark Corp. in U.S. diapers in late 2013 and has been growing it since. But it’s a different story in developing markets, particularly China and Eastern Europe, where K-C’s Huggies has grown rapidly and taken share from P&G’s Pampers in recent years.

Ironically, what’s helped each company in one region has hurt it in the other. Pampers is aiming to regain lost ground in China and Eastern Europe by introducing higher-end pull-up pants diapers. At the same time, Huggies is preparing to win back share in the U.S. in part with a sharper focus on pricing, K-C Chairman-CEO Tom Falk said in a January conference call.

Both are trying to capitalize on data about growth sectors in each market, and it boils down in part to who wears the pants — or doesn’t. Parents in the U.S. have been staying away from more expensive training-pants-style diapers to save money. Middle-class parents in China and Eastern Europe, who drive those markets, prefer those products.

Laundry Giants Bounce Back by Playing Both Ends Against Middle

Laundry products long seemed relatively recession-proof. After all, people had to do laundry, right?

Not necessarily. The Great Recession proved people really could and did use less detergent, or at least spend less for it. Now, the category is growing again. But it’s not about a rising Tide lifting all boats. It’s from both ends playing against the middle, as premium behemoth Procter & Gamble Co. and scrappy value player Church & Dwight Co. make gains.

In a recent presentation at the Consumer Analyst Group of New York, P&G Chairman-CEO A.G. Lafley said the category has struggled since 2007, when Unilever exited and “the middle of the market disappeared,” leaving P&G and value competitors. Heavily leveraged value player Sun Products took over ex-Unilever brands Wisk and All, but has since lost ground to freer spending P&G and C&D. Henkel’s Purex value brand also has lost some momentum.
