Land Rover Shfits Creative Account to In-House Agency Spark44


Land Rover is shifting its global strategic and creative ad accounts to Spark44, which handles its sibling brand Jaguar. Spark44 is jointly owned by its management and Jaguar Land Rover.

Young & Rubicam had handled creative duties, while Ogilvy & Mather handled digital user experience and web design and Wunderman handled CRM, Land Rover said.

Land Rover is switching to Spark44 as the brand prepares to expand two families of vehicles — Discovery and Defender. Both vehicle ranges will be priced above the Range Rover lineup.

Wheaties Makes Marketing Strike With Retro Bowling Ads


The Breakfast of Champions is going bowling. Wheaties — known for partnering with A-list sports stars like Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods — for its newest campaign is spotlighting a pro bowler whose heyday was back in the mid-20th Century.

That would be Andy Varipapa, who was known as much for his trick-shot making as his winning. Ads featuring vintage footage of Mr. Varipapa — who died in 1984 — will run during a Professional Bowlers Association event that will begin airing on Sunday on ESPN.

The ads (examples above and below) are part of Wheaties sponsorship of a PBA tournament series that occurs in Maine. As part of the deal, Wheaties will sponsor one of the competing teams, whose members will wear Wheaties bowling shirts. Other brands sponsoring teams include Geico and Barbasol, according to the PBA.

Marketers are told all the time that their customer data is valuable, but when it comes to some loyalty programs, that value is measured in more than marketing metrics. It’s measured in dollars.

Take United Airlines. Its MileagePlus rewards program is so valuable other companies including Chase Bank pony up hundreds of millions of dollars to pre-purchase miles to offer as incentives to their own customers.

Creditors of recently bankrupt Caesars Entertainment Corp have valued the firm’s coveted TotalRewards loyalty program at $1 billion — higher than the price tag placed on any of its physical casino properties.
