McCann Wins Ashley Furniture; SS+K Wins Jackson Hewitt

It’s official: today Ashley Furniture HomeStore appointed McCann New York as its creative agency of record and Compass Point as its media planning agency.

The press release names Ashley as “the #1 furniture retailer in North America and one of the fastest growing furniture brands in the world”; the company’s SVP of global marketing/ads calls McCann “a strategic partner who understands the powerful connection our brand has with our customers.”

In other AOR news, New York’s SS+K won the Jackson Hewitt Tax Services account. The agency’s creative work will drive a rebranding effort designed to position the company “as the financial partner for hardworking Americans.”

Incoming CEO Dave Prokupek writes, “Our industry is undergoing rapid change and SS+K has the vision to help differentiate the Jackson Hewitt brand and to drive sales.”

Nissan Times Spanish-Language Effort to World Cup Kickoff


Nissan North America kicked off a Spanish-language ad campaign today to capitalize on twin opportunities: global mania for the World Cup soccer championship, and Nissan’s own popularity among U.S. Hispanic consumers.

The ads will run on TV and social media, featuring high-energy Hispanic soccer fans playing soccer, watching the World Cup games and driving Nissans.

Nissan is working on the assumption that soccer is more closely followed by Latino and European consumers than by the average American household.

VW Scores In-Game World Cup Action With Web Play


The 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil starts today. Which means it’s time for non-sponsor Volkswagen of America to roll out its ambush marketing plans for the Golf GTI against official auto partner Hyundai Motor America.

VW’s ad agency Deutsch, Los Angeles, will dance around Hyundai’s exclusive sponsorship of TV halftime shows on ESPN and Univision by inserting so-called “Gooooooooolf Celebration Videos” on ESPN.com and Univision.com.

When goals are scored, these digital banners will pop up. Viewers will see different-colored GTI’s (matching the national colors of the country that scored) racing across the pitch. Instead of the familiar fan cry of “Gooooooooooooal” they’ll hear “Goooooooooolf” to promote the performance-oriented GTI, which VW says is more popular with younger and Hispanic car buyers.

Craig Marks, Veteran of Music Journalism, Named Editor in Chief of Spin.com


Music website Spin.com has named Craig Marks its editor in chief.

Mr. Marks was executive editor of Spin magazine in the 1990s before helping to introduce Blender magazine. “I’ve always been very involved in music journalism and I think Spin is the best place I could possibly be for that,” he told Ad Age.

Spin magazine, which began publishing in 1985, went all digital at the end of 2012, roughly six months after SpinMedia — then BuzzMedia — bought the title. It has shuffled through a handful of editors since then, most recently Jem Aswad, who took the job last June.
