Zack Secklers Photography

GE ‘Reimagines Home’ In New TV, Digital Campaign

Your kitchen isn’t just a kitchen anymore.

“The kitchen space has been redefined as another living space. The lines have been blurred between living room and kitchen,” said Tim Matis, director of advertising at GE Appliances, which just completed a $1 billion overhaul of the unit to better reflect how appliances fit into consumer’s lives.

The redo used consumer insights to make changes in everything from design to manufacturing and marketing, and the results will become clear Aug. 5 when GE breaks an aggressive new campaign themed “Reimagining Home.”

‘Breaking’ Brilliant: The Making of a TV Masterpiece

Our clip of the week this week is both a bit meta and a bit more than a clip. The first episode of Sundance Channel's excellent new series "The Writers' Room," which you can watch in full (22:34) online (it originally aired 10 p.m. EDT on Monday), is TV about TV, basically. In a brisk panel discussion moderated by host Jim Rash, "Breaking Bad" creator Vince Gilligan along with other key members of the creative team and series star Bryan "Walter White" Cranston, talk about the making of one of the most celebrated TV shows of all time. (In my book, it's right up there with HBO's "The Wire" among TV dramas.)

The second half of the fifth and final season of "Breaking Bad" premieres on AMC on Aug. 11.

Watch the full "Breaking Bad" episode of "The Writers' Room" right here.

Criado pelas agências Zulu Alpha Kilo e Media Experts, o movimento People for Good incentiva as pessoas a serem gentis umas com as outras.

Six Things You Didn’t Know About EnergyBBDO’s Dan Fietsam

Dan Fietsam took the creative reins at Energy BBDO in 2008. Since then, the Chicago-based shop has grown by leaps and bounds, winning major clients like SC Johnson, Frito Lay and Quaker. Most recently, it made headlines when it snapped up Bud Light domestically, reuniting the agency with the brewer’s VP-marketing, Paul Chibe, who had worked with the Chicago outpost of BBDO in the past.

Formerly of DDB, Y&R and Leo Burnett, Mr. Fietsam started his career at Ogilvy Chicago as a junior copywriter. He’s the latest participant in Creativity’s ongoing “Six Things” series.

1. The hardest thing he’s ever done was be a judge on “Celebrity Apprentice.” He calls it one of the “most uncomfortable experiences of his life.” The show has four cameras trained on the judges and filming at all times. “I was convinced I was going to absent-mindedly pick my nose and two million people would see it on TV,” he said.

New York Times Rebrands International Herald Tribune

It’s been ten years since the New York Times took full ownership of the International Herald Tribune, so the rebranding of the expat title has been a long time coming.

Some readers among the Paris-based IHT’s 224,000 print subscribers will likely be sorry to see the inevitable come to pass, when the 126-year-old newspaper changes its name to the International New York Times on Oct. 15. The paper launched in 1887 as the Paris Herald, and was most recently jointly owned by the NYT and the Washington Post from 1967 until 2003, when the NYT took full control.

“There’s a lot of nostalgia around the brand,” said IHT publisher Stephen Dunbar-Johnson. “It’s a romantic brand, and you don’t give up on a great brand like the IHT without a profound reason. In one word, the reason is digital.”

Severe Weather Alert! ‘Sharknado’ Forecast to Hit 200 Movie Theaters Tonight

Be advised that there is a “Snarknado” forecast for around midnight tonight across the United States. Experts advise that citizens take cover in a nearby multiplex — specifically one of the more than 200 Regal, Edwards, and UA movie theaters that will be hosting special one-night-only midnight screenings of the Syfy made-for-TV movie.

“Sharknado,” of course, became a massive social-media phenomenon with #Sharknado overtaking Twitter when the Syfy disaster spectacular first aired on TV on July 11. Can the buzz over this cheesetastic slice of pop culture translate into ticket sales? And, if so, will midnight screenings of “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” be next?

Here’s a list of all the theaters showing “Sharknado” tonight. You’ve been warned.

General Electric Selects OMD and MEC in Global Media Agency Shakeup

General Electric has retained Omnicom’s OMD in the U.S. and hired WPP’s MEC to support its media buying and planning in all international markets, as well as worldwide search.

OMD was the global media incumbent on the business in every market except for China and Vietnam, so it’s losing a portion of its international GE work. The Omnicom shop has worked with the company for more than a decade. Publicis Groupe’s Starcom had handled media buying in the two Asian markets, as well as the worldwide search business that now moves to MEC. MediaLink supported the search.

It’s a boost for MEC, which has had a tough couple of years on the new business front, especially in North America. The firm recently hired Carl Fremont in the newly-created role of global chief digital officer.

MSNBC Is a Model for Investing in Black Audiences

The annual Essence Festival not only drew record attendance this year, as 540,000 people from around the globe descended into New Orleans to see some of the hottest names in entertainment, it set what could become a new standard for diversity and real inclusion among mainstream brands.

I’m talking about how co-sponsor MSNBC handled its coverage of the events. The network charted a bold, new path, going beyond the normal “fly-by” reporting of the festival to having a presence for the entire event.

Parametric Expression
